Marine who died during tactical vehicle training at Camp Pendleton was from California

A 21-year-old infantry Marine from the Northern California city of Dixon has been identified as the servicemember who died during training at Camp Pendleton this week, Marine officials said Friday, Nov. 5.

PFC. Tanner F. Rubio “died in a tactical vehicle mishap” on Wednesday, officials said, but no more details on what type of vehicle he was in or near have been released, including where on the base the training was happening.

    Rubio, from the small town near Sacramento, was an infantryman assigned to the 1st Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division and had just joined the service in January.

    “The tragic loss of Pfc. Rubio is one felt across the 1st Marine Division,” Maj. Gen. Thomas Savage, commanding general of the 1st Marine Division, said in a statement. “He will be sorely missed, but his honorable service to his country will not be forgotten. All of us at the Blue Diamond will keep him and his family in our thoughts and prayers.”

    The training Rubio was participating in is unrelated to Exercise Steel Knight 25, which is set to begin this weekend on the base and go through Dec. 14. and involve multiple military installations. The 1st Marine Division-led exercise certifies the 5th Marine Regiment for deployment to Australia.

    The training death is currently under investigation, officials said.
