Packers Players and Coaches REALLY Don’t Like Ben Johnson and the Bears

Hate is a strong word, but I really, really, really don’t like you.

I never thought I’d reference a Plain White T’s song in a BN Bears post, but all bets are off when Bears-Packers Week arrives. One of the NFL’s longest-running rivalries has grown stale in recent years, mostly because Chicago’s organizaitonal ineptitude hand-delivering the all-time series lead to Green Bay in recent years. However, the arrival of the Ben Johnson era has shaken things up a bit.

And while we aren’t at a full-on war of words, there appears to be a spark that hasn’t been seen in quite some time:

Micah Parsons doesn’t like the Bears, but it’s not about the rivalry. It’s nothing personal either. For Parsons, it’s a respect thing.“You know how to earn someone’s respect is beating the shit out out of them.” pic.twitter.com/CjSnEHXfmB

Even if the sentiment from first-year Packers edge defender Micah Parsons is weird (because WUT!?), these types of vibes have been bubbling underneath the surface for a while.

For instance, The Athletic’s Dan Wiederer shared a quote back in September that was worth bookmarking for Bears-Packers Week with Green Bay’s Pro Bowl safety Xavier McKinney sounding off on Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson from when he was running the Lions’ offense (and Johnson’s response only amplifies things):

“I think they try to embarrass people,” McKinney said. “Personally, I’m not a big fan of that — trying to embarrass someone. I don’t really respect that. It is what it is.”

Indeed it is. And, from a karma standpoint, perhaps dangerously so.

But not only is Johnson unapologetic about that M.O., he embraced McKinney’s criticism. Almost sent a “thank you” note.

“To me,” Johnson says now with a wide grin, “that was the greatest compliment I could have gotten. All year long. Like, ‘You know what? You’re right. You’re 100 percent right.’”

Football is better when rivalries are hot. And it sure sounds like things are heating up between these two long-time adversaries.

The first-year Bears head coach endeared himself to the fanbase with this quip in his introductory press conference back in January (bold emphasis mine):

“I know this is the toughest division in football right now. There’s three teams that made the playoffs this year. I’ve got tremendous amount of respect for the coaches and the players in this league having competed against them for the last six years. Dan Campbell, Kevin O’Connell, you’re talking about two guys that are up for coach the year awards as the season ends here. And to be quite frank with you, I kind of enjoyed beating Matt LaFleur twice a year.”

On Sunday at 3:25 p.m. CT, it will be time for Johnson to put his money where his mouth is, prove it on the football field, and start beating Matt LaFleur’s team as a member of the Chicago Bears.

The Bears-Packers rivalry, which even Johnson acknowledges is a big one, is at its best when both teams are competitive. That hasn’t happened enough in our lifetimes as Bears fans. Hence, the vibes have been off when these two teams get together. Don’t get it twisted. I’m always amped for a Bears-Packers game. Throw out the record books when these two teams square off. And when it comes to Chicago’s recent record against Green Bay, bury those books in a place where they can never be found again because it has been ugly. The Bears have just two wins against the Packers since the start of the 2017 season. Ideally, Ben Johnson’s arrival will turn things around.
