Taking to Instagram on Friday, Dec. 5, Couric uploaded a photo from her wedding day with Monahan back in June 1989, a throwback snap that she said "popped up" on her phone this morning.
"We had no idea that day he would be diagnosed with metastatic colon cancer just 8 years later," she wrote. "It made me think that we never really know what lies ahead and it was a reminder to appreciate every day and cherish those you love."
Monahan was diagnosed with colon cancer in 1997. He died nine months later in January 1998, just two weeks after marking his 42nd birthday.

Couric added in her post on Friday, "When I showed Molner the photo he said, 'Oh…that’s so nice.' He never feels threatened by Jay's memory and understands a heart has space for two people."
"Anyway, just a reminder to be grateful today," Couric continued. "Tell the people who matter to you that you love them. Maybe even call your mother if you can. I’m Katie Couric and I approve this message. ❤️❤️❤️❤️"
"(PS. Nice poof lol)" she quipped at the end of the post while poking fun at her retro wedding hairstyle.
Couric's post was met with an outpouring of love and support, including one message from singer Sheryl Crow, who wrote, " Beautiful pic and beautiful message, Katie ❤️."
"Lovely to see this," another person gushed in the comments. "It’s such a pretty photo of the two of you. I’m so happy that you’ve found another wonderful relationship and can be a witness as to all the love a heart can hold! Beautiful!"
Someone else told Couric, "I’m so impressed with how you honor his memory."
Since Monahan's death, Couric has used her platform to advocate for cancer awareness, famously getting a public colonoscopy on-air in 2000. She also co-founded the Stand Up to Cancer initiative in 2008 to help fun cancer research.
