The 3km-long runway is part of a A$5bn upgrade to the airport, which includes new terminal space and a hotel.
It’s been described as Perth’s biggest-ever private infrastructure development.
As well as building the runway itself, the Skyway JV will have to demolish existing buildings and pavements on the site, divert utilities and storm water drains, and prepare the ground with more than a million cubic metres of fill.
It will build perimeter fencing, security systems and access gates, emergency and access roads, lighting and airfield drainage and landscaping.
It is expected the works will take approximately three years to complete.
30 million passengers a year
Perth Airport CEO Jason Waters said the appointment was one of the most significant contracts entered into by Perth Airport to date, and that it will “boost tourism, support businesses, create jobs, and strengthen our connection to global markets”.
He said he expects the airport to be handling 30 million passengers a year by 2046, up from around 17.5 million now, and that the expanded airport would generate 75,400 jobs and contribute $17bn to the state’s economy a year.
“The new runway will provide further operational flexibility for our aviation sector and will support Western Australia’s dynamic economy and provide opportunities for our airline partners to grow their business at Perth Airport,” he said.
CPB Contractors managing director Jason Spears said: “Working with Perth Airport and our partners at BMD, our team looks forward to creating a positive legacy for industry with our intelligent earthworks approach, unmatched safety record and award-winning paving and asphalt solutions.”
