ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Minimum wage is set to increase at the start of the new year, raising questions for local employers.

Workers will see a 50-cent increase in their paychecks after the new year, translating to just over an extra $1,000 annually. For local businesses, this means reassessing current wages and considering necessary changes.
Marilla Gonzalez, owner of Marilla’s Mindful Supplies, said she tries to pay her staff more than minimum wage. However, when the minimum wage increases, the entire pay scale shifts, which can strain the balance small business owners maintain between fair wages and adequate staffing.
“But if we cannot with the margins, it is a difficult year. A lot of costs are going up, not just minimum wage. If we can’t in that moment, then we try to make a plan to accommodate that. As soon as possible,” Gonzalez said.
Monique Chatman, owner of Equal Grounds Cafe, emphasized the importance of staying loyal to local businesses rather than larger corporations.
“I want to keep them on staff and be able to pay them so that they can pay their bills and keep their families alive in this economy,” Chatman said.
Chatman also mentioned that minimum wage increases affect the premiums she pays for disability and family leave. Workers’ schedules may shift to ensure everyone gets enough hours to pay their bills.
Both Gonzalez and Chatman expressed the stress of finding a balance as business owners, ensuring their staff is paid while keeping their businesses running.
It makes all the difference when the community chooses to shop at their stores over a corporate one.
The wage increase will raise paychecks to $16 an hour, approximately $33,000 a year.
