2025 Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 1 Girls State Championships

Nov. 20-21 Rochester, Michigan SCY (25 yards) Results

West Bloomfield swimming and diving head coach Ronson Webster admitted it was a bittersweet day.

On one hand, it was obviously joyful to see senior swimmer Elizabeth Eichbrecht make some history at the Michigan High School Athletic Association’s Division 1 State Championships.

Committed to Indiana, Eichbrecht won her eighth career individual state title, going off for a career sweep of the 200 and 500 freestyle events.

On the other hand, it was sad for Webster that it was the last time he would be coaching Eichbrecht in high school.

“It’s definitely going to be sad because I’ve spent a lot of time with her growing up,” said Webster, adding he had been coaching her on the club level since she was 8 years old. “But I’m super happy she’s moving on to college. “(Eight titles), that was one of her goals as a freshman. It was four years of work to get those goals. She got them.”

It might be a while before the state sees a swimmer as accomplished as Eichbrecht, who said she wasn’t really expecting to win eight state titles when she started as a freshman.

“It’s through hard work that you get it,” she said. “It’s an honor.”

Eichbrecht had record-breaking performances in the preliminaries in both the 200 and 500 free. She swam a personal-best time of 1:45.05 in the 200 free to break the previous all-finals record time of 1:46.25 that was set by former Olympic medalist Allison Schmitt in 2007.

In the prelims of the 500 free, she swam a time of 4:42.00 to break the all-finals record of 4:44.47 set in 2017 by Lola Mull of Grand Ledge.

In the finals, Eichbrecht won the 200 free in 1:45.98 and the 500 free in 4:42.89.

As a freshman, Eichbrecht won the 200 free in 1:48.42 and the 500 free in 4:52.71.

During her sophomore year, Eichbrecht captured the 200 free in 1:48.08 and the 500 free in 4:47.66.

Then last year, as a junior, she took the 200 free in 1:48.44 and the 500 free in 4:51.87.

While Eichbrecht was the story individually, the team competition was once again dominated by Ann Arbor Pioneer, which won its sixth straight championship.

“It’s really hard to stay on top,” Pioneer head coach Stefanie Kerska said. “They have been relentless all year. The coaches have tried to stay relentless by raising our standards. It’s a daily battle to really be at your absolute best, and these girls have done a really good job with that.”

Sophomore Tallulah Beg was the individual star for Pioneer, winning the 200 IM in 2:04.15 and the 100 breast in 1:03.42, both of which were personal best times.

Beg also helped Pioneer sweep the relay events.

In the 200 medley relay, the team of Cecilia Walusek (25.99), Beg (29.59), Poppy LaCrosse (25.77) and Kia Alert (22.48) won in a time of 1:43.83.

Pioneer’s team of Alert (22.98), Walusek (23.04), Ceclila Cook (23.79) and Kate Van Ryn (22.51) won the 200 free relay in a time of 1:32.32.

The squad of Van Ryn (50.44), Suryn Lee (52.01), Cook (51.78) and Yahanna Silva Castro (51.66) then captured the 400 free relay in a time of 3:25.89.

    Other individual winners were:

Alert, a freshman, won the 50 free in a personal best time of 22.91. That time is the 2nd-fastest in the girls’ 13-14 age group this season and the 48th all-time. Kalamazoo Central senior Kiya Bowman claimed 1-meter diving with 422.60 points. Emma Albrecht, a senior from Jenison, swam a personal best time of 55.12 to win the 100 fly. Van Ryn, a senior and Connecticut commit, won the 100 free in a personal best time of 49.94. Belleville freshman Miranda Phelps captured the 100 back in a personal best time of 56.07.
