I can’t believe I’m writing this, but according to a report on Thursday morning, Bucks’ superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo inquired about potentially playing for the Bulls, but the Bulls’ front office was not interested.
It’s only one report, and it’s from FOX Chicago’s Lou Canellis, who, while very much plugged into the city, is not an NBA Insider. But wow. For as annoyed as I am by this report, part of me can’t say I’d be totally surprised if it were true. Here was the quote from Canellis discussed on Mully & Haugh on 670 The Score this morning.
“Giannis and his representatives reached out to the Bulls about a potential deal, and the Bulls said they weren’t interested. They were not interested in breaking up their young core or changing their course of direction.”

For the life of me, I have zero idea why any general manager or person in charge of an NBA franchise wouldn’t be interested in adding Giannis to their roster. The Bulls don’t want to break up their young core? What? I’m sorry, I very much like Matas Buzelis and the future he appears to be capable of having. Coby White is a really nice player who can absolutely be a piece on a title contender. Josh Giddey is having a breakout. But none of those players are even close to Giannis.
None of them do what he does for an NBA franchise, both on the court as one of the league’s best players, but also off it in terms of boosting your brand and bettering your reputation in free agency and trade markets when going after superstars. Plus, those #34 Antetokounmpo jerseys would instantly fly off the racks at the United Center!
There really can be only two reasons why the front office would turn down Giannis.
First, they truly believe they have something special brewing in their young core. Which, truthfully, as much as I like those players, we know what their ceiling is without a true superstar. It’s a Play-In win or two and flirting with a potential first-round playoff series. Could Matas Buzelis potentially be that superstar? Maybe one day, but that one day feels like if it ever came, it’s still quite a bit away. I think
David Haugh hit things on the head this morning when reacting to Lou Canellis’ report.
The Bulls should be willing to offer anyone on the roster for Giannis Antetokounmpo in @DavidHaugh's mind."There's no young core to protect," Haugh says. "The young core is in the midst of its second 5-game losing streak of this young season." pic.twitter.com/5JXK7c8a79
— 670 The Score (@670TheScore) December 4, 2025The second reason would be that they have zero interest in taking on Giannis’ three-year, $175 million contract. The Greek Freak is owed $54 million this season, $58 million next season, and $62 million the year after that. The front office knows that after acquiring Giannis, they’d have to add a few more pieces to try and build around him, which would in turn get them into luxury tax territory, which we know this franchise doesn’t really have much interest in.
Part of me hopes this report is true. Knowing that Giannis has confirmed interest in playing for the Chicago Bulls would be awesome, and even if the Bulls shot down interest initially, maybe they could circle back at some point. But another part hopes it’s not true, because if the Chicago Bulls thought their young core was more valuable than adding one of the game’s true superstars, or they didn’t want to flirt with luxury tax territory, then you can pretty much rule them out in the pursuit of any real star that could become available while this current regime is in charge.
Earlier today, the Bucks announced Giannis Antetokounmpo would be out 2-4 weeks with a calf injury, which can be seen as interesting timing given the trade rumors popping up again. I doubt this is the last we here of these rumors over the next several days.
