‘James Bond Heist’ at Luxury Store Takes Bizarre Turn Inside Suspect’s Body

If there was ever a real life moment that felt ripped straight from a James Bond plotline, New Zealand authorities are currently living it. Police say a man allegedly tried to smuggle a limited edition Fabergé pendant out of an Auckland jewelry store by swallowing it, a move that seems dramatic even by Bond villain standards.

According to a report from the Associated Press on Wednesday, December 3, the incident happened on November 28 at Partridge Jewelers in Auckland, New Zealand when the 32-year-old man, who has not been named, was accused of eating a pendant that cost roughly $19,000. Police arrested him inside the store just minutes later. As of Wednesday, the alleged evidence still hasn’t resurfaced.

“At the time of his arrest, he underwent a medical assessment, and an officer is assigned to constantly monitor the man,” Inspector Grae Anderson said in a statement. “At this stage, the pendant has not been recovered.”

The suspect appeared in Auckland District Court on November 29, where he did not enter a plea on the theft charge.

The pendant he’s accused of swallowing is a showstopper on its own. It’s a limited edition Fabergé egg pendant inspired by the 1983 James Bond film Octopussy, which centered on a jewel smuggling ring involving a fake Fabergé egg. Only 50 of these real world versions exist, according to the store’s listing, and the craftsmanship leans directly into the movie’s aesthetic.

The egg is crafted from gold, painted with green enamel and encrusted with 183 diamonds and two sapphires. It stands 8.4 centimeters (3.3 inches) tall and rests on a miniature stand. And in true Bond fashion, it hides something inside.

“The egg opens to reveal an 18ct yellow gold octopus nestled inside, adorned with white diamond suckers and black diamond eyes,” the item description reads. “The octopus surprise pays homage to the eponymous antagonist at the centre of the Octopussy film.”

Police, meanwhile, are now waiting for nature to take its course.

“Given this man is in Police custody, we have a duty of care to continue monitoring him given the circumstances of what has occurred,” Anderson said.

The suspect is scheduled to return to court on December 8.
