View this post on InstagramWagner first appeared as Jaime Sommers in a 1975 episode of The Six Million Dollar Man titled "The Bionic Woman.” Fans fell in love with the old flame of Steve Austin (Lee Majors), as she took on special government missions using her bionic powers.
Wagner’s Bionic Woman spinoff premiered on January 14, 1976, on ABC. Wagner went on to win an Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in Drama Series for the role in 1977.
In a 2024 interview with Celebrity Drop, Wagner admitted that she was initially hesitant to do the series. “It’s sci-fi, and they're jumping off of buildings and they're like doing all these absurd things, and I'm, I want to do this business, I want to tell stories that help people,” she recalled.
She decided to give it a go and was amazed by how the show resonated with young women during its original three-season run in the late 1970s.
Wagner told People magazine the fame she received from The Bionic Woman was “overwhelming.” At the height of the show’s run in the 1970s, the Jaime Sommers character was featured on lunchboxes, t-shirts, and an action figure doll.
“It was the beginning of changing the image of women in the media,” The Bionic Woman star said in the 2018 interview. “Anybody over the age of 34 still tells me how I was such a big part of their childhood.”
