Lopez also connected her message to her work in the upcoming Kiss of the Spider Woman, a story she said means a lot to her because it highlights empathy, survival and the importance of telling untold stories.
She reminded the audience that representation remains a powerful tool: “All I have ever wanted is to help people get the visibility, resources, and respect they deserve.”
Kerry Washington, who presented the award, praised Lopez for inspiring her since they were young girls growing up in the Bronx. Washington said Lopez showed her “what creative courage looks like.”
