Seth Meyers Reflects on SNL Big Break 24 Years Ago

Even though Seth Meyers has been hosting his own late-night talk show since 2014, he still can't help but reminisce about his early days.

The 51-year-old comedian started his career while he was a college student at Northwestern University, where he joined the school's improv sketch group Mee-Ow Show. After graduating in 1996, he continued acting at ImprovOlympic and was even a cast member of Boom Chicago, an English-language improv troupe based in Amsterdam.

In 2001, Meyers joined the cast of Saturday Night Live, along with comedians Dean Edwards, Amy Poehler and Jeff Richards, right before the start of the show's 27th season. Three years later, Meyers auditioned to be a co-anchor for Weekend Update and got the part alongside Poehler, and by 2006, Meyers was promoted to headwriter. He continued doing Update until his departure in 2014, even after Poehler left the show in December 2008.

NBC announced in May 2013 that Meyers would be the new host of Late Night the next year, succeeding Jimmy Fallon, who is now the host of The Tonight Show. The comedian made his debut as a talk show host on February 24, 2014, and his first guest was Poehler. Since his premiere 11 years ago, he has hosted over 1700 episodes and has had hundreds of different guests on the show.

Late Night is taped in front of a live audience every weekday at 30 Rock's Studio 8G in New York City. In between interviews and segments, Meyers likes to host Q&A sessions with the audience. On Wednesday, the official X account posted a video of a fan asking the talk show host if he could relive one day from his entertainment career, which one would he choose?

"What a wonderful question...The day I found out I got SNL, I got to call a hundred people, and tell them about it...Everyone knew that was the show I grew up on," he said. "The reason I want to relive that one is it was before it had dawned on me that I would be bad at it. Or, that was a possibility."

He continued on, joking, "That was the last pure day I've had before I felt like the black wolf of failure breathing down my neck."
