First Alert Weather: Yellow Alert Wednesday night – Thursday for local lake snow

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – A Yellow Alert is posted Wednesday night into Thursday for areas of lake effect snow for some, and tumbling temperatures for everybody. Overall, Thursday will be a harsh day, but some areas will do some more plowing with localized snow, and roads will be slick at times. Breaking down the details: A band of Lake Erie snow develops Wednesday evening, and will remain in place for a few hours. During this time, travel along the Thruway west toward Buffalo will be slow and slick, with a period of moderate snow. A few inches of snow will accumulate fairly quickly, but that band will begin to drop south around midnight. That will spray less than 1″ of snow toward Rochester and the Finger Lakes. This band will break up by the Thursday morning commute, with scattered snow showers around for the AM rush. Organized lake snow may not be falling for the morning commute, but there will likely be some blowing snow and slick roads, as temperatures fall through the 20s.

The Lake Ontario snow band then will get organized through the mid to late morning, focusing on areas north and east of Rochester for a period midday into the early afternoon, before dropping south. So once again, accumulations should be fairly minor, but bursts of snow and periods of moderate snow may keep roads slick through the day. In addition temperatures will be dropping through the 20s, winds ramping up, and wind chills dropping into the single digits.

Lake snow begins to shift around and break apart Thursday night into Friday morning. We’ll see some clearing in the sky, and that means a cold start to Friday. Many areas away from Lake Ontario will drop into the single digits, with enough of a breeze to make it feel below zero during the morning hours. Overall, Friday will be cold but quiet with some sun.

The weekend will be wintry, with temperatures in the lower 30s both weekend days. Saturday will see a few passing snow showers, but no accumulation expected. Another cold front approaches on Sunday, which will bring a better chance for scattered snow showers, followed by another punch of cold air to kick off next week.
