The last decade has been a journey for Matthew Boyd, from trying to break through as a young starter with the Tigers, to suffering injuries and trying to make it back with the Mariners as a reliever, to returning to the Tigers as a starter, to having surgery and making it back with the Guardians, to breaking out as an All-Star with the Cubs this past season.
He’ll return to the Cubs’ rotation in 2026, hopefully as effective as he was in 2025, and maybe a touch better able to sustain the command as the innings build up – it was a huge jump for him in 2025, but now won’t be in 2026.
Before that, though, his journey will take another turn, as he announced today:
BREAKING: Matthew Boyd announces he'll play for Team USA in the 2026 World Baseball Classic! pic.twitter.com/ei4NDEosw2
— Foul Territory (@FoulTerritoryTV) December 3, 2025Very cool. Matthew Boyd will join Pete Crow-Armstrong on Team USA in the upcoming World Baseball Classic. Hearing him talk about how close he’d been before to representing Team USA, and now getting the chance to, it’s impossible not to happy for Boyd.
Obviously it’s also impossible not to think about the potential competitive implications for the Cubs, especially when it’s a starting pitcher. These guys are stretching out quite carefully and deliberately throughout Spring Training, which is when the WBC will take place. For the most part, the teams do their best to take care of the players, balancing their health with wanting to win games, but there’s a reason it’s tougher to get exceptional starting pitchers to participate in the WBC. There are some added risks. Trying to win a March game for your country in the biggest international tournament is fundamentally different than trying to get your pitch count up in some random Cactus League game. The physical impact is simply going to be different.
That said, there’s a lot of value in these big tournaments, varying in character depending on the player. For a veteran like Boyd, the value is mostly in getting to have a once-in-a-career experience, and good on the Cubs for not wanting to take that opportunity away from him. Hopefully it leaves Boyd fulfilled and eager to take on the season, and also in a good place ramping up to compete.
