UNC football transfer portal tracker: Who’s coming and who’s going in 2026

The college football season is over for the majority of teams at the Football Championship Subdivision level of Division I, including the University of Northern Colorado.

The 24-team playoff field was announced Nov. 23, leaving the 105 others to begin plans for 2026.

The early signing period for Division I football is Dec. 3-5, the transfer portal is open Jan. 2-16 and the regular signing period begins Feb. 4 and runs through the spring.

Earlier this fall, the NCAA announced it eliminated the spring transfer portal window for Division I football players and moved the winter window to January from December. The portal is one of the biggest additions to college sports in the last five years, and it allows players to change schools as many times as they choose without penalty.

With the end of UNC’s season, several Bears players have announced their intention to leave the program — including Cam Chapa and Carver Cheeks, both of whom were named to the Big Sky Conference first team following the regular season.

    ON THEIR WAY OUT

Cam Chapa – Safety – 2 years eligibility, plus redshirt

Chapa is the biggest portal entry since Thanksgiving weekend when receiver Carver Cheeks confirmed his intent to transfer.

Chapa’s been one of the best players at UNC and in the Big Sky Conference in his first two seasons in Greeley.

The 6-1, 193-pound sophomore from Aurora and Eaglecrest High School committed to the Bears during team’s winless season in 2023. He led UNC in tackles (171) and interceptions (8) in both seasons here.  Chapa was selected as one of best freshman in FCS last year.

He was named to the Big Sky Conference preseason team in July — the only UNC player selected — and backed up the vote with a second strong season to earn postseason all-conference first-team honors.

Carver Cheeks – Wide Receiver – 1 year eligibility remaining

Cheeks is leaving the Bears for a second time in two years, he confirmed over the Thanksgiving weekend. The 6-2, 210-pound junior from Colorado Springs had a highly productive season for the Bears, while earning All-Big Sky Conference first-team honors. He joins Chapa with intentions to enter the portal.

Cheeks caught 71 passes for 929 yards and six receiving touchdowns this year. He also had a rushing touchdown. Cheeks was one of the top targets of a much-improved Bears offense this fall.

Three of those receiving touchdowns came on a season-best day Oct. 18 at Sacramento State. Cheeks caught nine passes for 223 yards and the three touchdowns. The 223 yards were the most this season in a Big Sky game.

Cheeks’ 929 total receiving yards and 77.42 receiving yards per game both ranked fourth in the Big Sky as of the end of the regular season. He led the conference in receptions per game (5.92).

He went into the portal last year, decided to return to UNC as a walk-on and eventually earned a scholarship with his play this fall.

Fisher Clements – Tight End – 2 years eligibility remaining

The 6-7, 265-pound Clements announced his intention to leave the Bears said he’s leaving the Bears in a social media post Sunday. Clements dealt with injuries the last two seasons in Greeley. He was generally underused in the Bears’ offense, though injuries the last two seasons might have played a role as UNC relied more on tight end Charles Garrison and wide receivers Brayden Munroe and Carver Cheeks catching passes.

Peter Costelli – Quarterback – 2-3 years eligibility remaining

A graduate student, Costelli will transfer for the time in his collegiate career. Costelli went to the University of Utah out of high school, then to Troy University before arriving in Greeley in 2023. Costelli’s career with the Bears never fully developed because of injuries in his two seasons as a player.

Listed at 6-3, 220 pounds, Costelli is a dual-threat player who earned the starting QB job out of preseason camp both in 2024 and 2025.

He suffered a knee injury against Colorado State in the second game of the 2024 season. The injury did not require an operation and he missed most of the rest of the year. Costelli played in five games last year, threw for 591 yards and four touchdowns. He averaged 118.2 passing yards per game and ran for 88.

Costelli had a rushing touchdown and a passing touchdown in the season opener against Chadron State. Costelli suffered a broken collarbone (and sprained ankle) on a run late in the first half against Chadron State, and he missed a significant portion of the rest of the season.

Costelli played in four games this year, going 22 of 39 passing for 272 yards with a touchdown and four interceptions.

Eric Gibson Jr. took over as QB1 after Costelli’s injury, and Gibson Jr. was effective during an improved season for the Bears.

Costelli returned to the field for the first time Nov. 1 in a home blowout loss to Montana State. He played in three games late in the year as UNC coaches looked for better decisions from both Gibson Jr. and Costelli, according to head coach Ed Lamb.

Jace Villers – Linebacker – 3 years eligibility

The 6-3, 225-pound redshirt sophomore from Pacific, Washington spent the last three seasons with Bears. Villers appeared in one game in 2024.

Kaiden Box – Quarterback – 3 years eligibility

Redshirt freshman from Longmont and Skyline High School was caught up in the team’s quarterback carousel last year with early-season injury to Costelli. Box, listed at 6-4, 225 pounds, appeared in two games in 2024 with his best effort in the season finale at Portland State where he was 14 of 28 passing for 221 yards and a touchdown. Box did not play this season, ending up behind Gibson Jr. and Costelli on the depth chart.

Kolby Howard – Tight End – 3 years of eligibility

The 6-3, 240 pounder from Visalia, California spent two seasons with the Bears after starting his collegiate career at Utah. Howard appeared in three games in 2024, catching two passes for -10 yards.

Darrell Bryant Jr. – Safety – 1 year of eligibility

Bryant Jr., one of the team’s older players and a U.S. Army veteran, was a strong partner with Chapa in the defensive backfield.

He served as an infantryman in the Army from 2019-23, and one of his duty stations was at Fort Carson, near Colorado Springs.  He is from Hampton, Virginia.

Listed at 5-11 and 200 pounds, Bryant Jr. had 75 tackles (third on the team), two interceptions (second to Chapa), four pass break ups and two sacks.
