Just over a year after the death of fitness icon Richard Simmons at age 76, a deeply private piece of his life is being revealed to the world. A collection of more than 300 one-of-a-kind art dolls owned by the late star is heading to auction, giving fans and collectors a rare glimpse into the unexpected world of the celebrity. The collection, which includes figures estimated to sell for thousands of dollars, is being offered as per the celebrity's family's wish that these artistic treasures "now be shared with others."
The collection, titled Marquis: The Art Doll Collection of Richard Simmons, is heading to Theriault's in Annapolis, Maryland, for a live auction event on December 6. This auction reveals a fascination that was unknown to many of Simmons's public followers.
Simmons, whose death in July 2024 was ruled accidental due to complications from recent falls and heart disease, was an early patron of NIADA, the international organization of doll artists. He was described as a "well-known figure" at doll conventions for years. The auction features "Contemporary doll art, often referred to as figural art," spanning categories from beautiful women and children to mythological and whimsical creations.
The Barbra Streisand Doll and Other Standout Figures
The standout piece in the collection is a 28-inch figurine of Barbra Streisand, which is expected to fetch up to $3,500. While the Streisand doll ranks as the most expensive, many other items are poised to sell in the $1,000 range. This includes the 17-inch bridal figurine Here Comes the Bride by Antonette Cely, estimated at $1,500, and Portrait of Woman with Red Feathered Wings by Lisa Lichtenfels, estimated between $1,800 to $2,200.

While much of the collection features whimsical and fantasy themes, some of the figurines have an unmistakably "eerie" quality, such as the 19-inch Cloth Doll from Wistful Children Series by Nancy Latham, featuring red curly hair, estimated at $500 to $700.
Theriault's revealed that the pieces included are those that "meant most to [Simmons], not only for their artistry, but also for personal memories," and were kept by him until his death. The family stated that these items are now being sold because "it was his wish that these works of art now be shared with others." The news of the auction comes just after the price on the late star's Los Angeles mansion was reduced five months after hitting the market, signaling the continuation of settling his estate.
