BATAVIA, N.Y. — A Pike Road home in the Town of Batavia is likely to be a total loss after a two-alarm fire Tuesday evening. The Genesee County fire coordinator said there was fire from the basement to the attic of the two-and-a-half-story, wood frame house, which was heavily damaged.
Fire Coordinator Tim Yaeger said the residents were not at home at the time, nor were any animals. One firefighter was injured and was treated at the scene, he said. The origin and cause are yet to be fully determined, but he said two wood-burning stoves in the house were in operation.
He said having access to municipal water was helpful, but the home was some 1,000 feet off the road, making it difficult to get the water to the fire. Snow and ice buildup in the driveway also was a problem.
After being on scene for two to three hours, Yaeger said the fire was still being worked on and firefighters likely would be on the scene a couple more hours.
Firefighters from multiple departments were involved, including the Batavia city and town departments, East Pembroke, Alexander and Oakfield — pretty much the entire county, Yaeger said.
