Save for Lovie Smith, Chicago Bears head coaches have often danced around Packers Week and treated it as if it were just another game.
But Ben Johnson isn’t like other Bears coaches:
"It's a big week. We know how big of a rivalry this is." – #Bears HC Ben Johnson on this week vs. Green Bay.

Patrick nailed it in his Week 13 “Good, Better, Best” post when underscoring that rivalries are only truly rivalries when both teams are good and competitive. And because it has been a while since Chicago’s football team has been good or competitive, the Bears-Packers rivalry has gotten stale in recent years. I’m sure Green Bay backers would disagree with that sentiment, but I care not about their opinions this week. Or any week for that matter. But especially this week!
Don’t get me wrong. I’m always up for Packers Week. Good, bad, ugly, or indifferent. It doesn’t matter. Because when the Bears and Packers square off, I’m locked in and throwing out the record books. When you consider how poorly Chicago’s football team has played in recent years, it is highly encouraged to throw out the record books and burn them until there is nothing remaining but ash. And when we collect the dust from those ashes, let’s throw ’em in the lake because I wouldn’t mind if the Bears record was lost to the waters of Lake Michigan.

Since this site launched in January 2017, the Bears have two wins against the Packers. That’s it. Two lousy wins. The first came in December 2018, while the most recent occurrence happened in Week 18 in what was otherwise a lost 2024 season. Two stinkin’ wins. It is hard to consider something a rivalry when you have two wins against an opponent in the span of 3,257 days. But perhaps things will be different with Ben Johnson running the show. I can’t imagine things getting any worse.
© Dan Powers/USA TODAY NETWORK-Wisconsin / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn ImagesBears fans should feel optimistic as their favorite team heads into Episode CCXI of this ongoing saga. This team has the best record in the conference, just knocked off the defending Super Bowl champs in their building, and controls its own destiny heading down the stretch. The defense, led by Defensive Coordinator Dennis Allen, is opportunistic and gaining confidence. Meanwhile, the offense is being driven by a top-tier offensive line and a ground game that would make football purists blush with how it bullies opposing defensive lines. And in the end, it is Head Coach Ben Johnson that is the straw that stirs the drink at Halas Hall.

On top of all of the other reasons to be excited about Bears-Packers Week, allow me to add one more. This is the first time the Bears have gone into Lambeau Field with a coach who I believe is on par with his Green Bay counterpart. I don’t have to like Matt LaFleur to acknowledge and (begrudgingly) respect what he has done up north. And yet, I think Ben Johnson can go toe-to-toe with LaFleur. Heck, we’ve seen Johnson go blow-for-blow with LaFleur when he was the Detroit Lions’ offensive coordinator. This quote from Johnson’s introductory press conference back in January stuck with me and feels worth re-sharing today:
“I know this is the toughest division in football right now. There’s three teams that made the playoffs this year. I’ve got tremendous amount of respect for the coaches and the players in this league having competed against them for the last six years. Dan Campbell, Kevin O’Connell, you’re talking about two guys that are up for coach the year awards as the season ends here. And to be quite frank with you, I kind of enjoyed beating Matt LaFleur twice a year.”
Back in May, I wrote about what I learned about the Ben Johnson-Matt LaFleur head-to-head showdown. In my research, I found some numbers that Bears fans would find encouraging. Sure, I know the Bears don’t have the Lions’ personnel. And the Packers are a different team with Micah Parsons coming off the edge. However, I trust these Bears (more than any other group of recent vintage) to throw a worthwhile counterpunch to whatever the Packers are throwing their way. How can you not when Ben Johnson is the head coach?
