Caleb Williams’ box score wasn’t pretty in Philly, but there is a much bigger picture here that we need to consider.

This season, Williams is throwing with anticipation, but the accuracy hasn’t been there at times. However, many times when it has been there, the receiving corps has failed him. It’s a shared problem that Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson acknowledged this week when speaking to reporters on Monday.

“The primary receiver, when he’s open, we’ve got to make sure we hit him,” Johnson said on Monday. “And then all of our pass catchers, we just harped on it today, we need to be more disciplined in our route detail. It’s not where it needs to be. Our depth’s not proper all the time.”

What does Johnson mean by that?

As always in Johnson’s offense, there are levels. Rookie tight end Colston Loveland was running a choice route to the boundary on Williams’ right side. He was likely the first read. Burden was running a deep dig route on the left side over the middle and was likely the second read or alert.

Philly took the Loveland route away, and Williams identified that and was on to Burden, but Burden wasn’t where he needed to be. Burden had to clear the underneath defender by that point, and he had not, but Williams was already ready to throw (which he needed to be in a timing route like this) and had to get some air under the ball to clear that defender and give only Burden a chance to catch it.

Johnson’s offense is all about scheming guys open and hinges on timing. When the timing is off, you see plays like that that look like overthrows or inaccurate throws.

There is no doubt that Williams does need to be more accurate. It’s really the only thing missing from his game right now. But it’s important to understand where some of the inaccuracies come from, not as a defense for Williams, but to understand just how close this offense is to taking a massive leap in the passing department.

Johnson said on Monday that the team is winning despite the passing game, but that hardly amounts to a dig at Williams. It’s a message to everyone about getting on the same page. When Chicago’s young receiving corps (which features two rookies in Loveland and Burden and a second-year receiver in Odunze) does get in sync on these timing routes, watch out.

This throw was massive. Not only was it the backbreaker the Bears often search for and come up empty, but it was also an incredible throw, regardless of the game situation.

This is the type of throw that made Williams the No. 1 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, and the kind of throw that separates him from the rest of his peers. Once the accuracy deficiency resolves, you’ll begin to see the numbers you want.

Here’s another good job of working on time and throwing with anticipation deep. This ball is behind Moore, but the violent wind on Friday in Philly played a factor in that.
