Paul Finebaum reveals final decision on US Senate run

Paul Finebaum has decided against running to be the next U.S. Senator from Alabama. He revealed his decision in an exclusive statement to AL.com.

With the Senate held by Tommy Tuberville coming open due to the former Auburn coach’s run for Governor of Alabama, Finebaum publicly considered stepping away from sports media to head to Washington, D.C. He ultimately, however, decided to remain a college football commentator.

“I have been deeply moved by so many people in Alabama who have reached out encouraging me to run for the United States Senate,” Finebaum told AL.com.

“It has been a gratifying and rewarding experience.

“I am also appreciative of my bosses at ESPN for allowing me to explore this opportunity. But it’s time for me to devote my full attention to something everyone in Alabama can agree upon – our love of college football.”

Finebaum was considering a run as a Republican. He told Clay Travis of OutKick in September that the assassination of Charlie Kirk made him rethink his priorities.

In February 2025, Finebaum moved back to Birmingham, re-establishing Alabama residency in time for the potential Senate run. Despite the move, Finebaum’s show continues to originate from SEC Network studios in Charlotte, North Carolina.
