Robert Irwin wants his mom, Terri, to join Dancing with the Stars. The Australian wildlife conservationist, who won the Season 34 mirrorball 10 years after his sister Bindi took home the same trophy, told The Hollywood Reporterthat it’s only right that their mom hits the dance floor next.
“Listen, the petition to have my mom on Dancing With the Stars has begun, and I started it,” Robert, 22, told the outlet. “I started this season, and she is firmly like, ‘Nope, I’m not doing it. That’s not for me.’ And I’m like, ‘Well, I’m gonna wear you down.' So let’s wear her down and get her on there, because I think she would be great.”
Robert noted that neither he nor his sister had dance experience when they first joined the ABC celebrity ballroom competition. “We were able to dance and do this show, so that’s got to come from somewhere, right?“ he added. “Those dancing genes, I’m pretty darn sure they didn’t come from my dad. I mean, he was a very athletic human being, but [had] no rhythm. So, I mean, I guess [we got them from my] mom. It must be. I mean, it’s only fair, right? She’s got to do it.”
Terri Irwin was a guest in the DWTSaudience throughout her son’s Season 34 run. During an emotional appearance on "Dedication Night," she briefly joined Robert on the dance floor at the end of his routine.
After Robert won the Season 34 trophy with pro partner Witney Carson, Terri posted on Instagram to congratulate her son. “Your passion, dedication, hard work, and kind heart got you to this point,” the proud mom wrote. “A night you will remember forever. Thank you to everyone who supported Robert through this journey, and made us realize that even a zookeeper can learn to dance.”
Robert Irwin told E! News he wanted to keep the new family tradition going. “More of the Irwin-Carson family members have got to keep dancing,” he said.
“I told Terri, she needs to,” Carson added.
As for Robert, the latest Dancing With the Stars champ has already vowed to “stay within” the DWTS family, whether his mom is a contestant next season or not.
“I mean, that poor crew, I’m going to be part of the furniture now,” he told The Hollywood Reporter. “Like, they’re not getting rid of me. Next season, I’m like, I’m in, just tell me, I’ll do it all over again. Like, put me in, coach. I’m here. Let’s go!”
