Henry Winkler paid tribute to the late Robin Williams during an appearance at Fan Expo San Francisco. The fan event, which took place Nov. 28-30 at Moscone Center West in San Francisco, featured Winkler reuniting with his Happy Days co-starsAnson Williams and Don Most. But during a panel discussion, Winkler took time to remember Williams’ audition for Mork, an alien from the planet Ork who landed in Milwaukee during Season 5 of Happy Days.
In a TikTok video posted by It’s Rec Time Media, Media, Winkler, who played Fonzie on the ABCsitcom, recalled the first time he met Williams in the late 1970s.
“Here’s a guy, he comes in, you know, very, very unassuming,” Winkler said. ‘And then they put a script in his hand. And I said to him [as Fonzie], ‘Hey, you wanna rumble?'”
Winkler then began to act as Williams did, dancing and making noises in a high-pitched voice. He also shared the quick realization he made after five seasons as the star of Happy Days.
“All I thought about was, ‘Know your line so you don’t have to do it over and over again. And stay out of his way because you will never stand toe to toe with this Mount Vesuvius of an imagination,” Winkler shared.
Williams appeared in two Happy Days episodes between 1978 and 1979: “My Favorite Orkan” and “Mork Returns.” He went on to star in the Happy Days spinoff Mork and Mindy for four seasons, from 1978 to 1982.
During his Fan Expo spiel, Winkler revealed the special accommodations producers gave to Williams on set to make the most of his creative mind.
“So our scripts were 54 pages long,” Winkler said of the Happy Days dialogue. “His, on his set, they were 30 pages long. Because it said: ‘Robin will say something here.’”
Winkler previously addressed Williams’ creative genius during an appearance on the Fake Doctors, Real Friends With Zach and Donald podcast in 2024.
“A young, very shy, very quiet man comes with the casting director,” he recalled of the beloved actor, who died in 2014. “Then this human being picked up the script. When he opened his mouth, it was like a volcano went off on stage 19 at Paramount.”
The Happy Days star added that it was at that moment that he knew to “get out of his way, know my lines, and don’t try to stand toe to toe with this genius that is now standing in front of me.”
