Stranger Things Stars Unexpected Glow-Up Shocks Fans: No Business Looking That Good

For the first four seasons of Stranger Things, it could be said that Ted Wheeler was one of the show's least exciting characters. Played by Joe Chrest, the suburban dad to Mike (Finn Wolfhard) and Nancy (Natalia Dyer) has seemed more concerned with reading his newspaper and making clueless comments than any of the drama going on in his town (or even his house). That all changed in the second episode of Season 5, of course, when Ted bravely battled a demogorgon — and now Chrest himself is going viral for a recent red carpet appearance that has fans asking: "THIS is Ted?"

A clip of Chrest at the Stranger Things Season 5 premiere has been exploding on social media for good reason. As the caption on one video of Chrest shared on TikTok put it, "Damn, talk about a glow-up! Joe Chrest AKA Mr. Wheeler had no business looking that good at the #StrangerThings5 premiere."

"TED??? without cheeseballs, the remote & the lazy chair " asked the caption on yet another video.

"Karen I'm sorry for ever doubting your vision," quipped one commenter, referring to Ted's wife on the show.

"If he dressed like that every day Karen wouldn't be drinking," noted a second person, as another complained, "It's taken 10 years for us to find out Ted's secretly a silver fox???"

"Okay Mr. Ted Wheeler I was NOT aware of your game I'm sorry," someone joked, with somebody else lamenting, "We've been robbed for 4 seasons straight."

In an interview with The NY Post, Chrest, 62, reacted to all the fuss, calling it "funny and kind of a little awkward."

The actor also weighed in on the status of Ted and Karen's relationship.

“It seems like [Ted and Karen have] subtly drifted apart, because in Season 1, you definitely saw there were more tender moments — like when we were concerned together watching the news and holding hands, and stuff like that,” he said, adding, "As it often happens in real life, really intense situations can cause people either to come together or grow apart.”

Chrest went on to admit that he's been experiencing "various waves of emotional moments” as the beloved series comes to a close.

“When we closed down the Wheeler home…it was just such a special place,” he said. “It was there for a decade.”

According to Chrest, looking at pics of himself and his fictional son, Wolfhard, 22, has been especially emotional.

“He’s down below my armpit [in old photos]. And now, he’s taller than me. Nicholas, my own son, is the same age as Finn. I literally watched them grow up together,” he said. “My favorite thing in life is being a dad. It’s the best job in the world.”

Even if being a dad sometimes involves fighting monsters from the Upside Down, there are many who would agree.
