90s Rock Bands First Performance Without Late Bassist Leaves Fans in Tears

Limp Bizkit fans in Mexico City saw the band return to the stage this weekend for the first time since bassist Sam Rivers’ passing. The show, which also launched the Loserville Gringo Papi Tour, celebrated Rivers’ legacy with an emotional tribute.

Fred Durst and the surviving members of Limp Bizkit had vowed to continue performing in honor of Rivers — and they stayed true to that promise.

The night began with a video commemorating Rivers, showing clips of his performances with Limp Bizkit over the years. The remaining members sat in chairs facing the screen, which read,  “Sam Rivers, our brother forever” and “Sam Rivers, we love you forever.”

Durst then turned to the audience and said, “Now we’re gonna do this s*** Limp Bizkit style. Tonight, this one’s for Sam Rivers.” The band then launched into their set, welcoming fill-in bassist Richie “Kid Not” Buxton, who also performs with tour opener Ecca Vandal.

Fans were visibly moved by the tribute. In the comments, one wrote, "It's heartbreaking to see our idols go," while another shared, "When a rocker sheds tears, their spirit becomes metal. Sam's loss is deeply felt. Long live rock."

In an Instagram post ahead of the Mexico City performance, drummer John Otto opened up about the challenge of playing without Rivers.

He wrote, “Today is going to be tough. A first I never wanted to experience. Especially not now. You’ve been there for so many major firsts in my life. Some of my earliest memories were made with you. We grew up together. Laughed together. Realized our dreams together. And traveled the world together. You’ve always been there.”

Otto continued, “The godfather to my girls, my best friend — my brother. There will never be another you. We’re going to honor the life you lived and the love you spread with every show we play. You’ll always be with us. Thank you to our fans for all the messages of support and tributes to Sam. It means the world to us. This one’s for you Sammy.”

The cause of Rivers’ death has not been revealed, but on October 18, the band lost their beloved bassist. Limp Bizkit honored him on social media that day, remembering him as their “heartbeat.”

They added, “From the first note we ever played together, Sam brought a light and a rhythm that could never be replaced. His talent was effortless, his presence unforgettable, his heart enormous."
