The Blackhawks desperately, desperately needed a win on Sunday. They had lost five straight games. There were two in which they were competitive against two of the best teams in the league… but those were followed by an absolute clunker against a mediocre (bad) Nashville team. They needed a strong performance.
And then the game started. And, after 47 seconds, the Blackhawks were down two goals. Ten minutes later, they were chasing three. Against a good Anaheim team that was skating circles around them right out of the gate. It felt like this one could get ugly — like the loss in Buffalo.
But a late first period power play goal gave the Blackhawks a little bit of life.
And then Connor Bedard flipped a switch and took the game over.
We’ve seen Bedard impose his will on games a few times over the past couple years. And it’s been impressive each time. But it didn’t always amount to a Blackhawks win. And, in too many instances, he was in the front of a would-be line asking “Who’s coming with me?” and the old guys were working on their knee braces on the bench.
Last night, the rest of the black jersey-wearing Blackhawks got on their feet and followed him into the fight.
Ryan Greene and Colton Dach scored goals — Dach’s a game-tying goal on the power play. Greene’s came off a gorgeous no-look pass from Bedard. Then Bedard finished the job himself with two unassisted goals in the third period. The 5-3 final had the Blackhawks feeling the good vibes again for the first time in a couple weeks.
After his empty net goal put the nail in the Ducks’ casket, Bedard’s stare down of the Anaheim bench barking at his good friend Mason McTavish showed that he isn’t going anywhere. There was a Kurt Russell as Wyatt Earp “I’m coming — and hell’s coming with me!” feel to it. A massive amount of swagger and leadership from a 20-year-old. And that, my friends, may be a moment we look back on in March and April this year (and in future years) as an individual moment that impacted the trajectory of the Chicago Blackhawks.

— Bleacher Nation Blackhawks (@BN_Blackhawks) November 30, 2025“[Connor] plays with fire,” Jason Dickinson said after the game. “The best players in the league, they always rise to the occasion. Whatever you have to do to get yourself there is whatever you have to do. Everybody’s got their own recipe. For Connor, it’s to play with a little bit of swagger.
“[When] he puts up two [goals] and two [assists], he can walk around with a little bit of a chip on his shoulder and let them know he’s here.”
“I just don’t know any great players who aren’t hyper-competitive,” head coach Jeff Blashill said. “That shows itself in different ways. I don’t think he’s always demonstrative about it. But there’s probably times you’re going to be demonstrative.”
I pointed this out last night, but it’s worth repeating again here: there were four games in November in which Bedard was held without a point. In the four games that followed: hat trick against Calgary, two assists in Buffalo, two points against Minnesota (goal, assist) and last night’s four-point effort. Bedard has yet to go two straight games without a point this year, and he’s coming back from an 0-for with a big game. There are no slumps from 98 this year. Oh, by the way: Bedard won 8 of 12 faceoffs last night, too. I don’t know how Canada doesn’t take Bedard to the Olympics at this point, folks. Good read from Ben Pope here on Frank Nazar still working thru some things after his injury. Tyler Bertuzzi redirected a Nazar point shot for a goal last night. He ended November without a goal, but had six assists — including a helper in six of the last eight games of the month. He’s getting physically right and playing with more confidence."There are times when he could attack outside a little bit more. [He could] maybe not try to beat guys 1-on-1, but [instead] use his speed to get guys on edge and then beat them."Diving into the Blackhawks' current advice for Frank Nazar: t.co/QH7MXUEVul
