Big Al has added a new achievement to his list, landing at 16th place on BetUS’s “Hall of Fame Hotties: The Sexiest Mascots in College Football” list.
The study evaluated more than 100 Division I mascots using factors like personality, appearance and popularity. They also factored in the “Mascot Golden Ratio,” which uses color theory, social media following and amount of searches to find what makes a “stand out” mascot.
“Big Al being ranked number 16 is hilarious, but kind of iconic,” said Keillyn Muniz, a freshman sports management major. “He’s not even trying to be sexy, he just has that confidence that people love.”
Others pointed out that Big Al’s charm isn’t really about looks at all.
“He just gets the crowd going,” said Madi Bradley, a sophomore nursing major. “He really brings out some school spirit.”
In the final rankings, Big Al fell behind other competition in the state, including Miss Pawla and SouthPaw of the University of South Alabama, who finished second and third on the list respectively. In the Southeastern Conference, Big Al was ranked behind Tony the Landshark of the University of Mississippi at 12th, Hairy Dawg from the University of Georgia at ninth place and Cocky of South Carolina, who topped the list as the sexiest mascot in all of college football.
For some, Big Al’s ranking at 16 was not high enough.
“Top five for sure,” said Collin Bruyns, a junior majoring in management information systems. “Honestly, I’m still annoyed at how the college football committee has ranked Alabama this season.”
Whether or not Big Al fits anyone’s definition of “sexy,” students agree on one thing: He’s a symbol of the Crimson Tide. From hyping up the crowds to posing with fans, he continues to represent the spirit of Alabama and its fans.
