Elton John Producer Admits Iconic Singer Was Extremely Volatile in the Studio

Elton John has been known to have a temper through the years — and one of his producers admits that was still the case when they were recently working together in the studio.

While John was recording his collaborative album with Brandi Carlile, Who Believes in Angels?, his producer Andrew Watt says he had to learn to operate in a specific way with the singer. Comparing him to "Mozart or Beethoven," Watt said that John writes "in a way really no one else writes."

"[He's] a little more like Beethoven, I would say, and when he's writing, he's extremely volatile," Watt told PEOPLE in an interview published on Sunday (Nov. 30).

He continued "My job is to read the room, and if you're in Elton's eye line as he's writing, you're in the f---ing lion's den. So I would try and be around him to make sure I was close enough to when he would call for me or needs something, or I could hear what he was doing, what he was coming up with."

The producer, known for his work with Justin Bieber, Pearl Jam and the Rolling Stones, also noted that for the most part, he "would try and be out of his direct eye line."

Despite the sometimes tough conditions, Watt praised John for his ability to take a lyric and then turn it into a "movie scene in his head," singing the "words, fitting them into the chords and coming up with melodies based on the words and the phonetics of the words."

Overall, Watt says their time together was "really magical" and he felt like they were "capturing lightning in a bottle" every day.

"When he got through it all, he was so proud, and it was a really, really special, special time. I'll never forget," Watt concluded.
