The Free Fall Continues, So Many Issues, Lachlan Olbrich’s First Basket, and Other Bulls Bullets

Growing up roughly 35 minutes north of Chicago, I am a master of the Midwest goodbye.

Bleacher Nation announced my expected departure on Monday. The rather ambiguous Help Wanted post let folks know that a Bulls writing position is open, which I encourage anyone and everyone to apply for here. Since that news broke, I have gone on to hover by the coat rack and write 17 more posts. Just leave already, right?

Saying farewell is hard. Sure, perhaps one reason is my Illinois origins, but I think the much more significant reason is the last six years. I joined Bleacher Nation straight out of college to spearhead their basketball coverage. I could not have asked for a more supportive group of individuals to begin my career alongside, and I could not have asked for a more rewarding experience as a sports obsessor and content connoisseur.

During this time with BN – and later the fantastic team at Betsperts – I transformed into the person I wanted to be on and off the computer screen. They have been a tremendous part of my growth, which is why I will continue to cheer on everyone associated with this site and all things Betsperts until I lose my voice. But that’s also the thing about being human, you never stop transforming. I will always be chasing a better version of myself, and now feels like the right time in my life to lace up the sneakers and start a new race.

To be sure, you will still see me running on by. I’ll be sharing news on my next steps soon. Until then, however, it’s time to slap the ole knee, mosey my way over to the door, and finally say goodbye.

Unless you had some time for one more drink?

When I first joined Bleacher Nation, Jim Boylen was the man in charge of the Chicago Bulls. So, doesn’t it only feel right that he was also a part of my final game here? The disgraced head coach has been an assistant on the Indiana Pacers for the past couple of years, which means he played a role in handing his former organization arguably its most embarrassing loss of the year. The Pacers came into the night with only three wins on the board. They have looked completely and utterly lost without Tyrese Haliburton, and part of that has even been by design! The franchise appears to be in full tank mode, hoping to pair another highly-touted prospect with their healthy superstar in 2026-27. Last night was a game the Bulls needed to win, especially after dropping two straight. Instead, they were on the wrong end of a game-winning jumper. For those keeping track at home, the Bulls have lost to a flock of two-win Pelicans, a swarm of four-win Hornets, and a slow-moving three-win Pacers – all in a row! It would not be an exaggeration to declare this among the worst three-game stretches by any team this season. To make matters worse, they will now have to head to Orlando to play an Orlando Magic team that is 8-2 in its last ten games. What comes after that? A meeting with the three-win Nets and one more against the Pacers. Should this schedule feel daunting? Not at all … but the Bulls have somehow made it! Mandatory Credit: Stephen Lew-Imagn Images Obviously, defense has been a major issue for this team over the last two weeks, but it’s not the only one. Chicago gave up only 103 points to Indiana and STILL lost. What made this Bulls team feel so deadly to begin the year was their ability to take full control of the tempo and force opponents to play their brand of basketball. They had an identity that was so clearly defined and universally accepted by their rotation. You don’t get that feeling anymore while watching this group go to work. They are feeding into the hands of their opponents on a nightly basis and looking considerably more disconnected. After making a season-low eight threes against the Hornets, they go ahead and dish a season-low 24 assists against the Pacers. Likewise, the Pacers came into the night allowing the most made free throws per game. The Bulls tied their season low in this department. How does that happen!? Hey, at least Lachlan Olbrich got his first taste of NBA minutes. With Jalen Smith a late scratch, the second-round pick clocked 11 minutes and scored his first career basket. We all know plus-minus can be an unreliable stat, so I’m not going to argue that Olbrich’s +15 was truly reflective of his impact, but he did look pretty good out there! He brought a level of physicality this group needed despite being a tad undersized. The Aussie is also pretty good at getting up and down the floor. I’m still not sure exactly how he fits into the NBA long-term, but the potential versatility and feel for the game he offers at the five is interesting.

Lachlan Olbrich’s first NBA bucket comes off a Giddey dish.2 points, 3 rebounds, and a +15 in 11 minutes. A great first hit-out that should warrant more minutes going forward; screen setting, rim running, quick slipping/rolling has looked at the level.pic.twitter.com/pyS7Sh3PdU

    — Olgun Uluc (@OlgunUluc) November 30, 2025 Emanuel Miller also got his first taste of NBA action this season and scored 6 points in 7 minutes. Hey, with the way this season is trending, who’s to say we don’t see more of these two in the coming weeks? Same goes for rookie Noa Essengue, who was unfortunately a scratch last night after injuring his shoulder with Windy City. Let’s hope it’s nothing severe. Speaking of injuries, when the heck is Isaac Okoro coming back? The forward has missed the last four games with a back injury. Even if he wasn’t off to a stellar start this year, there is no question that this team desperately needs his defensive instincts on the floor. According to K.C. Johnson, the NBA has moved the Bulls’ recently scheduled meeting with the Pelicans from Dec. 14 to Dec. 15. So, one less day of rest! Woohoo!

    — K.C. Johnson (@KCJHoop) November 29, 2025 The Bears’ offensive coordinator should be earning some attention around the league after the team’s 9-3 start. The Dylan Cease signing surprised many around baseball, so Brett takes a look at what it could mean for the Cubs and the rest of the pitching market.
