Today we are kicking off our annual Holiday Food Bank Fund Drive. Our readers will notice one significant change this year. We are asking for almost double our previous drive goal, $200,000.
There is a reason for this. The federal government has slashed food related funding everywhere and, as we all know, food costs are way up. These two factors have made it very difficult for our local Ukiah Food Bank to maintain operations. Just last week the Food Bank gave out 590 food baskets for Thanksgiving, compared to 375 just last year. The need out there is real and growing.
Our Ukiah Food Bank is a service we all hope we will never need, but we are so thankful that it is there for the many veterans, seniors and disabled people on fixed incomes and the working families with children who otherwise would be going hungry.
While the Food Bank gets funding from a variety of important sources, this local drive is what keeps the lights on, the food vans on the road, the refrigeration running and the tiny staff paid. Our Ukiah Food Bank has been able over the years to become a real asset to this community, with a grocery store-like atmosphere that allows the needy to have not only staples but fresh food, the fruits and vegetables that so many on low incomes otherwise have to forgo. That’s important for the health of our community.
While our $200,000 goal is significant, we have number of kickoff donors whose generosity is allowing us to start with a little over $115,000. They include: T. R. Eriksen Foundation $50,000; Partnership HealthPlan of California $22,500; Arlene & Michael Rosen Foundation $10,000; Anonymous $5,000; Harold & Vivienne Henderson Family $5,000; Redwood Credit Union $5,000; Steven & Elisabeth Pasternak $2551.26; Anonymous $ 2,500; Mabel Albertson Foundation $2,000; Suzanne Hardie $2,000; Bruce & Carol Mordhorst $1,000; Savings Bank of Mendocino County $1,000; David & Melissa Schatz $1,000; Paul Shimmin $1,000; Anonymous $1,000; Shoefly $1,000; Penny Walker $1,000; McCarty’s Auto Body $500; James & Jacqueline Williams $550; John & Marie Benke $350; Leslie Banta $250; Mary Jane Sheppard $250; Paul Putter $100; Adele Sommers $100; Carol Dotson (in memory of Diane Keaton) $50; David & Patricia Longstreth $50; for a total $115,701.26
