ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Local small businesses in Rochester encouraged residents to shop small this holiday season, with many participating in Small Business Saturday. News10NBC spoke with local business owners and customers about the significance of supporting local shops during the holidays.
“It’s just really exciting, you know, just fun to see your avenue alive and it just warms my heart tremendously,” said Jen Plunkett of Aaron’s Alley.
Customers echoed the sentiment, emphasizing the importance of local support.
“I think it’s important because it comes back locally,” said customer Sara Glauser. “You also end up seeing a lot of friends or people that maybe you haven’t seen in a while, and it’s just nice to enjoy what is here in the area of Rochester.”
Angie Cooney, another customer, said, “You know, we have beautiful neighborhoods and businesses. And so I want to support that.”
On Park Avenue, businesses like Figgy Studio & Shop helped other businesses by allowing newcomer Vietnamese coffee stand Ca Phein to set up on their front porch.
“It’s our first time in this area and all day we had a pretty steady crowd of people walking by,” said Zach Patrick Scott of Ca Phein.
Megan Bishop from Figgy Studio & Shop said, “As we all know Black Friday is really huge for everybody, but seeing so many people turn out for Small Business Saturday, specifically to shop small, support the community really, it’s just really nice.”
Back on Monroe Avenue, a holiday bazaar provided small vendors a platform to showcase their products.
“This is my first year doing the pop ups, and such with the lemonade and the dirty sodas,” said Leslie Say of Love Fern Lemonade. “But I’ve had a great community with my cookie business.”
Searni Knight of NY Stylee said, “I feel like coming to the holiday bazaar has brought such a different excitement to the avenue.”
Local businesses hope the support continues throughout the year, fostering a thriving community.
