Not even several inches of snowfall could stop shoppers dedicated to celebrating Small Business Saturday in Chicago this year.
Despite the heavy snowfall that blanketed the Chicago area Saturday, holiday carolers and shoppers were out in Chicago’s Lincoln Square neighborhood to celebrate the holiday and support local businesses.
“You can buy online any time of the year and you’re not helping the little guy. We got to shop small and buy local, and put money back in our local businesses,” said Jenna Iberle, a shopper at Genevieve Boutique on Lincoln Avenue.
The store offered discounts and had a wheel customers could spin for additional prizes.
“It’s honestly one of the best days of the year for us and we love seeing our community support us,” said manager Kate Reyes. “And we show them love by giving little discounts.”
A stroll down a snowy sidewalk took shoppers next door to The Chopping Block, where customers weren’t only getting their hands on cookware deals, but also taking cooking classes.
“I think Small Business Saturday is important for us as a community,” said Lisa Counts, executive Chef and owner of The Chopping Block. “We are made up of small businesses and I think that’s what makes Chicagoland great.”
Leaders of the Lincoln Square Ravenswood Chamber of Commerce said it’s one of the most important days for small businesses in their communities.
“It’s actually become one of the busiest days of the year for our community. We’re just really excited to be able to celebrate the holidays,” said Rudy Flores, president of the LSRCC.
The Lincoln Square Ravenswood Chamber of Commerce is an association made up of approximately 250 local businesses and professionals in Chicago’s Lincoln Square and Ravenswood neighborhoods.
Lincoln Square is set to host its tree lighting Saturday at 5:30 p.m. despite the storm.
