Which ‘80s Pop Icon Got Seasick on ‘The Love Boat’? (Exclusive)

Just as fans went on a special retro cruise last week with some of the main cast members of The Love Boat, Parade.com has learned that it wasn’t always smooth sailing for the guest stars.

In a recently rediscovered interview, one of the classic show’s former regulars who isn’t appearing on the cruise said that a couple of guest actors got seasick, including a big 1980s pop icon!

Devoted fans still fondly remember The Love Boat, which aired on ABC from 1977 to 1986 as a series and also included four specials that aired in 1986, 1987, and 1990. The show featured numerous guest stars playing characters in romantic stories that inspired both laughter and tears. The regular cast starred Gavin MacLeod (who died in 2021) as Captain Merrill Stubing, Bernie Kopell as Dr. Adam Bricker, Lauren Tewes as cruise director Julie McCoy, Fred Grandy as purser Burl “Gopher” Smith, Ted Lange as bartender Issac Washington, and Jill Whelan as Captain Stubing’s daughter Vicki. Pat Klous replaced Tewes in 1984 as her character’s sister Judy McCoy.

For three seasons, Ted McGinley was also a cast member as ship photographer Ashley “Ace” Covington Evans, and he told a reporter which stars had trouble on the high seas. Read on to find out more!

    Who is Ted McGinley?

McGinley, who now stars on the comedy-drama Apple TV + series Shrinking as the fan favorite character Derek, the husband of Liz (played by Christa Miller), has had a long and very successful TV career. Now 67, the handsome American actor appeared on Happy Days from 1980-84. His The Love Boat gig ran from 1983-86.  McGinley then played Clay Fallmont on the nighttime soap opera Dynasty from 1986-87. He hit sitcom gold in his run as Amanda Bearse’s character Marcy’s second husband Jefferson D’Arcy on the hit sitcom Married… with Children from 1991-97. The versatile star has also been on Sports Night, The West Wing, and Hope & Faith. Not afraid to dabble in reality TV, McGinley competed on Dancing with the Stars season 7 in 2008 and on the Battle of the Network Stars reboot in 2017 on ABC.

Which stars did McGinley reveal got seasick on The Love Boat?

While promoting Battle of the Network Stars in 2017, McGinley told a reporter what happened during his Love Boat time when the show guest starred a young Janet Jackson and The Odd Couple and Quincy M.E. actor Jack Klugman (who died in 2012 at age 90).

McGinley recalled, "We had Janet Jackson and Jack Klugman on one of our cruises and we hit some really rough seas and Janet Jackson was on [board] with her mom [Katherine Jackson] and she didn't come out of her room, she was so sick. I felt so bad. And Jack Klugman, same thing. They were so seasick that they couldn't work. It was brutal. And then we'd go into a port and they could work and then go back out [to sea]. I remember delivering bagels to Janet's room, putting them by her door. She and her mom were both sick. And I have never seen her since but I wanted to let her know and I don't think I even left a note. I felt bad."

Seasickness was something that couldn’t be helped, but McGinley said of The Love Boat producers, "Aaron Spelling and Doug Cramer would take care of you. It was first class. Those were good days."

When was Janet Jackson on The Love Boat?

The Jackson family beauty and future “Miss You Much” and “Escapade” singer, now 59, was a child actress before her massive Control album success. She sparkled on the sitcoms Good Times from 1977-79 and Diff’rent Strokes from 1980 to 1984 as Todd Bridges’ character Willis’ girlfriend. Jackson made her Love Boat appearance in 1985 on the show’s ninth season in a two-part episode called “Roommates/Heartbreaker/Out of the Blue.” During a Scandinavia Cruise, Jackson played actress Delia Parks, who began as a love interest for bartender Issac. But viewers then saw her character was actually an evil woman, as Delia assisted a villain played by Kojak star Telly Savalas, who creates a robot duplicate of Issac!
