Jelly Roll Spent Thanksgiving Delivering Meals to Prison Inmates

Jelly Roll has a big heart, and he proved that over the Thanksgiving holiday when he gave back to the same community where he grew up. The Antioch, Tenn., native, 40, wanted to make sure no one was left behind this season when it came to digging into the turkey and stuffing, so he lent a helping hand.

The rapper turned country star jumped in, rolled up his sleeves, and got to work to help provide inmates with a special one-of-a-kind meal they’ll never forget. Jelly Roll, according to American Songwriter, stopped by the Metro-Davidson County Detention Facility in Nashville to serve 300 meals to incarcerated individuals, who weren’t able to spend time with their families this year.

A video uploaded on Thursday, Nov. 27, via Facebook by Nashville Sheriff Daron Hall showcases the tenderhearted moment when Jelly Roll surprises a massive group of men, wearing orange jumpsuits. Set to his smash “Need A Favor,” it appears Jelly Roll also spoke to the bevy of incarcerated men, who gave him a round of applause.

“During this season, I'd like to give thanks for giving Jelly Roll. Last night, he provided a holiday meal to 300 inmates and staff on the same site where he was once incarcerated,” the caption reads alongside the clip.

“Moments like this show the impact one person can make when they choose to lift others up,” a separate post by Hall reads, alongside a handful of photos from the beautiful memory. “Thank you, Jelly Roll, for turning your past into purpose.”

Indeed, Jelly Roll, whose real name is Jason DeFord, has come a long way. In fact, his youth was marked by run-ins with the law and time spent in juvenile detention. Although he was always passionate about music, it wasn’t until he found out he was going to become a father that he made a plan to get out of jail for good. Upon reevaluating his life, he began a transformation journey, which has since led him to become a household name and a proud father and husband to his daughter Bailee Ann and wife Bunnie Xo, whose real name is Alyssa DeFord.

Jelly Roll Was in the Giving Spirit

As part of the Thanksgiving holiday, Jelly Roll also showcased his generous spirit by working with the Nashville Rescue Mission to serve meals as part of the Nashville Rescue Mission for the Great Thanksgiving Day Banquet.

“Any day is a good day to serve. I want to bring my boys here, and I wanted to pour into the graduates from this program, which is why we’re here. But, the Nashville community, nothing in the world means more to me,” Jelly Roll told WKRN. “I can now say that I’m an artist who has traveled the world. There’s no place like home. This is the city that made me who I am and gave me my spirit for giving.”
