VICTOR, N.Y. — Black Friday brought out crowds of shoppers to Eastview Mall, with many saying the nostalgia and family traditions were just as important as the deals.

“I come every year, to Black Friday. Absolutely love it. The atmosphere, the people, the decorations, and the attitude of everyone here is just really excited to be here for the holidays,” said shopper Linda Roberts.

For Sandi Augonis, shopping on Black Friday is a way to connect with loved ones she’s lost.

“My mom and my sister and I we spent every holiday here. And my mom’s actually no longer with me so I just get a really good feeling coming here and remembering those times,” said Augonis.

Many families, often spanning two or three generations, were introducing their grandchildren to the tradition Friday. The scene was busy but not aggressive, with no reports of fighting over items or rushing into stores.

Workers at the mall had been preparing all week, staying late to stock shelves and clean stores. Cashiers at stores like JC Penny’s and Von Maur were stationed at nearly every checkout to keep lines moving quickly.

One worker at Aur Society, Emily Cawley, said she got up at 4:45 a.m. Friday.

“So we got a bunch of shipments in so we’ve been processing that all week, reorganizing everything and just making sure everything’s clean and organized for everyone to come in.”

Cawley says Aur Society is a newer store that experienced its first Black Friday. The workers tried maintaining a positive attitude for customers despite the challenges of dealing with impatient shoppers. Most customers, however, were kind, workers said.

Early Friday morning, News10NBC’s Kristi Blake saw a line grow outside the Target at Marketplace Drive in Henrietta. When she got there around 4 a.m., about 20 people stood outside. By 5 a.m., an hour before opening time, several dozen people had lined up.
