George Harrison's first post-Beatles solo release, All Things Must Pass, came to life on November 27, 1970.
At the time, Harrison was a mere 27 years old. His band, which leapt from overnight stardom to quickly becoming one of the most revered of its generation, had publicly split in April of the same year.
The four Beatles: John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr(Richard Starkey), each produced their own solo projects both before and after the band broke up. Unlike the others, however, Harrison is noted by some critics to be the first to truly thrive following the split.
"When the divorce came he was the first Beatle to establish a seriously successful solo career," says an excerpt from a 2001 Hot Press tribute from Jackie Hayden, re-released this month in honor of the album's 55-year anniversary.
Hayden continued: "Despite McCartney’s greater musical versatility, it was George who could claim Eric Clapton as his guitar buddy. Despite Lennon’s commitment to introducing meaningful lyrics into pop and rock songs, George was the only Beatle to share songwriting credits with the maestro Bob Dylan. And whereas Lennon and McCartney’s early work was heavily influenced by the vocal style of Roy Orbison, it was George who actually got to play in a band with the Big O himself."
In November of 2001, Harrison died from cancer. He was 58 at the time. The second Beatle to face an untimely death, his legacy lives on via continual tributes to his music and his message.
