Hilary Duff Says Jennifer Coolidge Was a Little Scary on the Set of A Cinderella Story

Hilary Duffis looking back at one of the most memorable roles — and costars — of her early career.

In a new interview with Variety, Duff revealed that working with Jennifer Coolidge on the 2004 teen classic A Cinderella Story came with some unexpected nerves. Coolidge played Fiona, the over-the-top “evil stepmother” to Duff’s Sam, and according to the former Disney Channel star,  working with a strong personality at such a young age was intimidating.

“It’s been so much fun to watch her career because she just goes there in such a big way that it was really impressive and slightly intimidating as a teenager,” Duff, 38, shared with the outlet. “She was, like, mean to me, so it was a little scary 'cause I was only 15 and she was just, you know, mean to me 'cause she's my evil stepmother. At the time, I think I had to be like, ‘You're filming a movie. You're filming a movie.’”

Coolidge’s performance as the fashion-obsessed, tan-loving antagonist became one of the film’s standout elements, and the movie itself helped cement Duff, Chad Michael Murray,Regina King, and Dan Byrd as 2000s teen-movie fixtures. Years later, Duff told Andy Cohenon Watch What Happens Live in 2023 that she was “really proud” to see Coolidge, 64, experiencing success in her career. “She's always been a lovely human being, but I'm really proud to see her moment,” she shared.

But Duff is gearing up for a moment of her own. The singer announced that her first full album in more than a decade is officially on the way. Titled Luck… or Something, the project arrives February 20, 2026, following the release of her recent single “Mature.”

In an Instagram post teasing the record on November 21, Duff told fans that “so much love, late night anxiety and a little chaos” went into making the album. “I love you and excited is the largest understatement,” she wrote, adding that the project is available for preorder now.

Duff’s last studio album, Breathe In. Breathe Out., arrived in 2015, making this long-awaited return to music a full-circle moment for fans who grew up with her.
