Karen Gillan, Kevin Hart, Jack Black, and Dwayne Johnson return for a fourth installment of the Jumanji franchise. Heading into filming, Johnson reveals the small item included in the movie that is a tribute to the original actor, Robin Williams.
The Moana actor shared a video on Instagram to commemorate the first day of shooting, dressed up as his character Dr. Smolder Bravestone. While the characters' costumes relatively stay the same in each installment, fans may notice a new accessory.
"This is the dice from the original Jumanji with Robin Williams as a show of respect," said Johnson.
In the video, he shows off a woven necklace with a worn-out dice in the center. For fans of the original movie, it's clear why it's a tribute. William's version of Jumanji was based on the original board game, which included playing pieces, rather than a video game like the following installments.
"[It's] a way of honoring Robin and this entire franchise that he started as we film our very last Jumanji. The big finale. Here we go, let's shoot," added Johnson.
The 1996 movie starred Williams as Alan Parrish, a now grown-up an whose been stuck in the Jumanji game for years. Siblings Peter and Judy start playing the game, meet Alan, and are determined to win to free him from the game for good.
The dice from the original movie aren't the only time the sequel franchise has paid tribute to Williams's character. In Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, Nick Jonas plays a similar character to Alex, another player who's been stuck in the game, and lives in Alan's former home in Jumanji.
The treehouse even features a carving that says "Alan Parrish was here."
Jumanji was one of Williams's well-known roles in his career, having not only left a lasting impression on fans but co-star Kristen Dunst.
