Ultra Swimmer of the Month: Anna Moesch

By James Sutherland on SwimSwam

Ultra Swim Swimmer of the Month is a recurring SwimSwam feature shedding light on a U.S.-based swimmer who has proven themselves over the past month. As with any item of recognition, Swimmer of the Month is a subjective exercise meant to highlight one athlete whose work holds noteworthy context – perhaps a swimmer who was visibly outperforming other swimmers over the month, or one whose accomplishments slipped through the cracks among other high-profile swims. If your favorite athlete wasn’t selected, feel free to respectfully recognize them in our comment section.

Coming off a very impressive freshman year, University of Virginia freestyler Anna Moesch has been on fire to kick off her sophomore season with the Cavaliers, leading the team into a new era following the graduation of the Walsh sisters.

Last week at the CSCAA Dual Meet Challenge, Moesch was electric by cracking the top-five all-time in both the 100 and 200 free while also lowering her 50 free best time on multiple occasions, helping the UVA women win the inaugural meet title.

One day prior to the start of the Dual Meet Challenge, Moesch raced the 50 free at the “Tennessee Invite,” which was essentially a time trial, and she reset her best time twice, first clocking 21.67 in the prelims and then going 21.61 in the final. Coming in, her PB stood at 21.84, set at the 2024 Tennessee Invite.

After only swimming on a pair of relays in Virginia’s opening dual of the tournament against Arizona State, splitting 46.09 on the 400 free relay and 46.05 anchoring the 400 medley, Moesch had a pair of historic swims on the following day during the Cavaliers’ dual with Michigan.

First, in the 200 free, Moesch exploded for a time of 1:40.25, knocking more than a second off her previous best set earlier this season (1:41.42, which is the fastest time ever produced in October) and moving her up to #4 all-time in the event.

    Missy Franklin, Cal – 1:39.10 (2015) Gretchen Walsh, Virginia – 1:39.34 (2025) Mallory Comerford, Louisville – 1:39.80 (2018) Anna Moesch, Virginia – 1:40.25 (2025) Katie Ledecky, Stanford – 1:40.36 (2017)

In the NCAA this season, Moesch ranks #1 with USC’s Minna Abraham the only other woman sub-1:41 at 1:40.47.

Later in the meet, in the 100 free, Moesch became just the fifth woman ever under the 46-second barrier, clocking 45.98 to knock more than half a second off her previous PB of 46.53, set earlier this season. She came into the campaign with a best time of 46.76, set at the 2025 ACC Championships.

    All-Time Performers, Women’s 100 Freestyle (SCY)

    Gretchen Walsh, Virginia – 44.71 (2025) Simone Manuel, Stanford – 45.56 (2017) Erika Brown, Tennessee – 45.83 (2020) Kate Douglass, Virginia – 45.86 (2023 Anna Moesch, Virginia – 45.98 (2025)

In the seasonal rankings, Moesch moves to the top spot ahead of Stanford’s Torri Huske, who clocked 46.15 last weekend at the Texas Hall of Fame Invite.

Moesch also anchored the UVA 200 free relay in 21.18 during that dual with Michigan, with the team’s time of 1:24.83 currently ranking them #1 in the country.

In the championship dual meet the following day, facing off with the Wolverines once again, Moesch won the 50 free in another lifetime best of 21.52, ranking her 9th in the NCAA this season. She also won the 100 free in 46.05, narrowly missing her newly minted PB set the day prior.

In the 200 medley relay, Michigan held a lead of nearly nine-tenths over Virginia going into the freestyle leg, but Moesch blasted a stunning 20.85 anchor leg, the fastest of her career and first sub-21, to nearly run down the Wolverines, though they prevailed by two-tenths, 1:33.26 to 1:33.46.

Moesch also split 21.34 on the 200 free relay as Virginia cruised to victory.

At the end of the meet, Moesch was recognized as the Women’s Swimmer of the Meet.
