Alabama football head coach Kalen DeBoer was victorious in his first Iron Bowl, but he will face a different beast when he enters Jordan-Hare Stadium on Saturday.
Auburn’s home field has troubled the Crimson Tide since the rivalry was first moved on campus from Legion Field in 1989. Alabama has a 7-10 record at Jordan-Hare Stadium and did not win on the Plains until 1999.
DeBoer is no stranger to heated rivalries, having won several key rivalry games in his tenure at Washington, including three Cascade Clash victories over Oregon and two in the Apple Cup over Washington State. His Huskies defeated the Ducks twice in 2023 en route to a national championship appearance.
Since taking the Alabama job, DeBoer has fared well against its rivals. He has a combined 4-1 record against the Crimson Tide’s three main foes: Auburn, LSU and Tennessee. His lone defeat thus far came in a 24-17 slugfest loss to the Vols at Neyland Stadium last season.
“We’re gonna be going into an SEC environment. It is our rival. It’s got, again, a lot of history to it,” DeBoer said of the Iron Bowl to Crimson Tide Sports Network. “We’re just gonna focus on our preparation. The things that matter to us is what our mindset is, and what the week looks like as far as the work.”
Former Crimson Tide head coach Nick Saban posted a 5-4 record in Iron Bowls played at Jordan-Hare Stadium. He lost 17-10 in his first trip to the Plains at Alabama in 2007.
Saban reaffirmed his beliefs in Jordan-Hare voodoo on ESPN College GameDay in October.
“You’ve got the tip-six, which I watched, because Auburn was basically out of the SEC race,” Saban said. “They win that game on that. Two weeks later, they beat us on the ‘Kick Six,’ knock us out, get themselves in [the SEC title game]. But this place, I told you this before, it’s haunted.”
With the “Kick Six,” the Tigers spoiled Alabama’s perfect season, stole its spot in the SEC Championship and all but eliminated the Crimson Tide from BCS National Championship Game contention in 2013, ending the team’s chance for a rare three-peat.
Saban suffered two further defeats at Jordan-Hare in 2017 and 2019. The latter saw Crimson Tide kicker Joseph Bulovas miss a game-tying 30-yard chip-shot field goal with two minutes remaining, and an illegal substitution penalty committed by the Crimson Tide in the final minute sealed the team’s fate, a loss in a 48-45 barnburner, which eliminated Alabama from College Football Playoff contention.
While the magic of Jordan-Hare Stadium has often swung in favor of Auburn, the two most recent Iron Bowls held on the Plains have seen the tides turn in favor of Alabama, which could bode well for DeBoer.
The Crimson Tide won improbably in both 2021 and 2023, with the latter producing a moment arguably as memorable as the “Kick Six.” Alabama quarterback Jalen Milroe found wide receiver Isaiah Bond in the near corner on fourth down and goal from the 31-yard line, giving the Crimson Tide a late lead on a play now known best as the “Gravedigger.”
“I mean, we lost games there in overtime, we won games in overtime,” Saban said. “We went out on the Gravedigger on 4th & 31, and then they’ve come back and beat us. Got 12 guys on the field when they have a quarterback in on the punt.”
Saban added that some of the most unusual events in his career took place on the Plains.
DeBoer will be tasked with weathering the Jordan-Hare storm, especially once the fourth quarter begins, which is where Auburn excelled in 2013 and 2019. He said Monday that he knows what the game means to the state, and that the game is a “huge deal for us as well.”
No. 10 Alabama will travel to face off with archrivals Auburn in the 90th edition of the Iron Bowl on Saturday at Jordan-Hare Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. CT and the game can be streamed on ABC.
