ROCHESTER, N.Y. — If your gas meter is inside your home, it won’t be long until RG&E or NYSEG come knocking, asking you to set up a time to have it moved outside. The utilities have set aside money to do this work and they’re working their way across our region.
Almost half of the people in RG&E’s service area still have gas meters inside their homes. The goal of this project is to start moving them all outside which should better for both the customer and the utility.
Most of the indoor meters were installed decades ago.
Alexis Arnold, an RG&E spokeswoman, said, “This is my neighborhood Jenn, my house was built in 1926 and my meter was relocated just a couple of weeks ago.”
RG&E contractors are continuing to make their way through Irondequoit and the City of Rochester, doing the same for others. The utility says it’s primarily about safety.
“When we talk about the mandated inspections that need to be done or if there’s any kind of safety incident, crews are allowed or will have direct access to be able to get to that meter outside without inconveniencing the customer to get access inside the home,” said Arnold.
The switch should also be helpful for meter reads. You’ll no longer have to schedule a time to have one done to ensure you’re being billed accurately.
If you’ve already got a smart meter, that moves with you outside. If you don’t, these contractors just handle the move, another crew will have to schedule smart meter installation.
“It requires a couple of hours of work, so a customer does have to be home because crews need to be able to go in, access that meter inside in order to be able to move it outside,” said Arnold.
Arnold added that appliances and heat will be temporarily turned off during the process, but everything will be relit and checked afterward.
RG&E and NYSEG are reaching out to customers directly to set up appointments for this, they’re trying to coordinate crews so they can get as many homes in any given area as possible at the same time.
