There's a reason a good night of sleep is called "beauty rest," because you actually can wake up with glowing skin—if you incorporate a few key skincare steps, that is. Taking care of your skin before bed becomes even more important with age, because the surface naturally dulls over the years. So for some key tips on how to achieve brighter skin by morning, Parade consulted an expert: board-certified dermatologist Dr. Beau DiCicco.Dr. DiCicco is the Chief Medical Officer for The Dermatology Specialists, Medical Director for The Skin Academy and the 2025 Derm in Residence for Kiehl's. And he used his years of experience to give us some expert advice on achieving glowing skin overnight. Here, he lays out seven nighttime habits for brighter mature skin that are especially helpful for women over 50.Of course, not every skin condition can be magically resolved with eight hours of rest. As Dr. DiCicco says, "I wish I could say a perfect over-the-counter skincare routine would be enough for everyone, but there are instances where OTC just isn't enough, and you need the RX stuff." He adds, "Everyone has skin, but it's not a one-size-fits-all game. Sometimes, seeing a professional will save you a lot of headaches."So, you can give Dr. DiCicco's seven easy skincare habits a try, and then progress to in-office help if you need to.Related: 7 Skincare Rules Women Over 50 Shouldn’t Ignore, According to Dermatologists

Dr. DiCicco says that skin loses vibrancy with age for a few reasons. One is because skin cell turnover slows. "It can take twice as long to make a fresh layer," he explains, sharing that UV damage also "makes our skin barrier much less efficient at protecting and renewing."Aging also leads to less oil production. "Often a nuisance in early life, [oil] is actually critical to maintaining the health of our skin barrier," he says, adding, "Finally, elastin—the fibers that give our skin ... elasticity and bounce—breaks down and becomes less abundant over time."Related: 14 Best Foundations for Mature Skin, According to Celebrity Makeup Artists

How Do You Brighten Aging Skin?

"The best thing you can do for your skin tomorrow morning is what you did the last 10 years, not what you're doing tonight," Dr. DiCicco acknowledges. That said, the second best time to start is tonight. "Our goal is to protect the skin now so we have less damage to fight against later," he stresses.Related: I’m a Celebrity Dermatologist in My 60s and Here’s the 5-Minute Skincare Routine I Swear By

7 Nighttime Habits for Brighter Mature Skin, According to a Dermatologist

Dr. DiCicco recommends picking "a gentle cleanser" for your nighttime face-washing routine. He suggests using something like the La Roche-Posay Hydrating Gentle Cleanser ($20) or the Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser ($14).Related: 14 Best Cult-Favorite Drugstore Beauty Products for Women Over 50, According to Celebrity Makeup Artists

    2. Exfoliate

Instead of a physical exfoliator, Dr. DiCicco recommends using a chemical exfoliant like "a light BHA or AHA serum, wash or peel." One option he likes is the Fig.1 Glycolic Glow Treatment ($36) which contains glycolic acid as the AHA.

"Always, always, always moisturize ... did I mention moisturize?" Dr. DiCicco says, adding that this is one of the most important steps "to wake up to a plump, hydrated face." His moisturizer pick is the La Roche-Posay Double Repair Face Moisturizer ($25), which is packed with beneficial ceramides.

    4. Consistent Retinoid Use

"Find a retinoid or retinol product that works for you; it will help maintain cell turnover, increase vibrancy [and] even out pigment," Dr. DiCicco says, adding, "The key here is consistency. I tell patients I don't care whether you put this on every night or twice a week, as long as you're doing it consistently."He says your goal should be to use the product as often as you can—up to once per night— as long as your skin isn't getting irritated. Try his retinol eye cream picks: Fig.1 Pro-Retinol Eye Cream ($37) and RoC Retinol Correxion ($22).Related: The Best Anti-Aging Skincare Routine for Women Over 50, According to Celebrity Estheticians

Dr. DiCicco wants to highlight how important sunscreen is for skin health. "The single best thing you can do to maintain the vibrancy and youthful appearance of your skin into your wiser years is sunscreen," he says. "At night, think about the sunscreen you'll be putting on in the morning."You can even set the bottle out at night so you don't forget to apply it when you wake up. One sunscreen Dr. DiCicco likes is the DUNE Suncare Mineral Melt ($30).

    6. Add Vitamin C

"If you want to get extra, add an antioxidant serum [to your routine]," Dr. DiCicco says, mentioning vitamin C products as "extra credit" for your skin to help "mitigate as much damage from UV as possible."Fig.1 also has a vitamin C face serum ($38) with a powerful formula aimed at increasing the skin's radiance.

    7. Protect Your Skin Barrier

It's important to pay attention to how your skin reacts to your nighttime products—lest you undo all your hard work by going overboard. "When your face is inflamed [or] irritated, we need to pump the brakes on all things retinoid and exfoliative," Dr. DiCicco says. "Stop all actives until the skin barrier is restored, then reintroduce them." He adds, "If you're irritating your skin ... we're being counterproductive; we want to mitigate inflammation, not cause it."As long as your skin reacts well to your cleansers, moisturizers and serums overnight, Dr. DiCicco says you can "start planning a long-haul routine to get you glowing every day"—and you can begin by following the nighttime steps he's laid out above.
