The 91st Chicago Thanksgiving Parade presented by Forvis Mazars drew thousands to downtown Chicago for this annual tradition.
More than 100 floats, balloons, and acts made their way north on State Street Thursday, with revelers lining the streets to catch the show. Some were seeing the parade for the first time, including Edselle Macatuggal, who is visiting family in the suburbs from Atlanta.
“It’s freezing,” she told NBC 5 News. “I came here from the Philippines four years ago and Thanksgiving we don’t have it in the Philippines so it’s a new tradition for us.”
The parade drew acts from all over the country and the world, including a marching band from Mexico.
“We also have cultural groups that live right here in our city and they share their fantastic cultures with us through dance through songs, through performances,” said parade spokesperson Ashley Berry.
High school seniors from Mobile, Alabama represented the Azaela Trail Maids, led by their queen Ashton Sprinkle.
“Our cape that we bring out in the winter time has fleece and it keeps us nice and warm,” she said Thursday morning before the parade stepped off.
Each year there are new Azaela Trail Maids, so marching in the parade truly is a once-in-a-lifetime chance.
The Stagnito family is counting their blessings this Thanksgiving, especially for their mom Sharon, who woke up at 6 a.m. to snag the best view of the parade down State Street.
Gracie Stagnito says this year she is thankful for:
“Her coming at 6 a.m. definitely. Thankful for mom,” she said.
Chef Blaque, who is originally from Bronzeville and gained fame as the winner of Netflix’s Sugar Rush, served at the Grand Marshal of the parade this year.
