Happy Thanksgiving! Jaylon and Kyler Are Back, Time to Stuff the Pro Bowl Ballot Box, and Other Bears Bullets

Happy Thanksgiving, Bears fans! Let’s get into BN Bears Bullets, but with a twist. Because today is Thanksgiving, I wanted to use this space to share some things I’m thankful for (while also talking Bears football before the Black Friday game against the Eagles).

Bears things I’m thankful for in 2025

THE RETURN OF KYLER GORDON AND JAYLON JOHNSON

In case you missed it, the Bears are getting their top two cornerbacks back in time to face a Philadelphia Eagles offense that features top-tier pass catchers such as DeVonta Smith and A.J. Brown:

This is the first time Jaylon Johnson will have been healthy for a stretch run in which the Bears were in the thick of the playoff race. If you’ll recall, Chicago’s football team made the playoffs in Jaylon’s rookie year. However, Johnson was unavailable down the stretch and did not play in the team’s playoff loss to the New Orleans Saints because of a shoulder injury. I love that he will finally get a chance to play some meaningful football.

I’m also curious to see how Bears Defensive Coordinator Dennis Allen handles the rest of the secondary now that he has Johnson and Gordon. Where does C.J. Gardner-Johnson fit? What about Nahshon Wright? Is Tyrique Stevenson the odd-man out? So many questions, but so many possibilities.

BEN JOHNSON ACCEPTING THE BEARS’ HEAD COACHING GIG

The No. 1 thing I’m thankful for as a Bears fan is that Ben Johnson took the offer to become the Bears head coach. And based on how things have gone with the Raiders, I’m sure that Johnson is thankful he didn’t take his talents to Vegas.

You can point to a number of reasons to be thankful for Johnson’s arrival. The change in culture, the upgrade in offensive innovation and scoring, the shift in the narrative surrounding the team, and an 8-3 record heading into Thanksgiving are atop the list of obvious reasons. But for me, I’m most thankful for Johnson bringing an air of professionalism toHalas Hall. I got burned out using the “You’re Not Serious People” screen shot and .gif from HBO’s Succession when talking about Matt Eberflus and his staff. I’ve not even thought of using that once this season. What a difference a year makes, eh?

I suppose I’m thaknful for Matt Eberflus’ incompetence because none of this would have been possible had it not been for his coaching mishap on Thanksgiving 2024.

ADVANCED ANALYTICS THAT HELP ME UNDERSTAND CALEB WILLIAMS’ PROGRESS

I’m not overly concerned (yet) about Caleb Williams’ accuracy problems. This isn’t to say I’m looking the other way when it comes to the dip in his accuracy. However, I’m not losing sleep over it right now. And that is because the overall body of work suggests that Williams is playing well *DESPITE* his accuracy issues.

Here are some notable ranks for the Bears QB (via PFF):

    12.1 yards per completion (4th) 9.2 Average Depth of Target (10th) 16 Big-Time Throws (10th) 12 Turnover-Worthy Plays (26th)

How I’m looking at this: Even though Caleb Williams has a sub-60 percent completion rate this season, he is making up for it with big plays — and in high-leverage moments. And because Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson doesn’t believe in 50-50 balls as a viable offensive strategy, it’s not like someone can point to Caleb padding his stats with “eff it” balls down the field in hopes that Rome Odunze, DJ Moore, Colston Loveland, Luther Burden III, or someone else will make something out of nothing.

Now, imagine what Caleb’s numbers would look like if his accuracy percentage ticked up…

THAT DAN ROUSHAR CAME OUT OF RETIREMENT TO LEAD A TOP-5 OFFENSIVE LINE

While the players are at the heart of the upgrade, let’s give some love to Dan Roushar. The long-time offensive line coach left retirement to help return this group to prominence. Brad Biggs (Tribune) shares some background in this column:

Directing the unit behind the scenes is 65-year-old Dan Roushar, who was about a month into retirement when the opportunity came along. He’s an old-school coach with a knack for reaching Gen Z, and while he’s not particularly interested in sharing his story, it’s quite a tale of commitment to the craft for a guy from Clinton, Iowa, who grew up a Bears fan and played quarterback at Northern Illinois.

(Bears Head Coach Ben) Johnson expressed confidence in crafting a plan with general manager Ryan Poles. Less than two weeks later, that led to hiring Roushar — who had not worked with Johnson previously — to lead the way.

When Johnson called Roushar, he had recently retired after a two-year stint as Tulane’s offensive line coach. The pull back into the business was too much to resist for Roushar, who initially transitioned into a student assistant role at NIU under Bill Mallory in 1983 and continued in that role the next year under Lee Corso.

Following the Chicago Bears offensive line has been a point of frustration and a source of heartburn in recent years. But three offseason additions along the interior offensive line and a rotation of fresh faces at left tackle have turned what was a woeful group in 2024 into a unit that has earned the fourth-best grade from Pro Football Focus entering Week 13.

The Chicago Bears have a top-5 offensive line. Let that sink in, folks. How can you not be thankful for that?

I’M THANKFUL THAT THE BEARS HAVE PRO BOWL-CALIBER PLAYERS WORTH VOTING FOR THIS YEAR

At least I don’t have to stretch to talk up the candidacy of potential Bears Pro Bowlers:

I’m thaknful for a healthy Jaquan Brisker, who brings an energy that is easy to gravitate toward as a fan:

    THE ALLIANCE

If not for the impromptu Bears-Eagles alliance, Chicago’s football team wouldn’t be in first place atop the NFC North. The Alliance is over (for now), but will always be remembered fondly:
