History's first American pope, Pope Leo, is spending Thanksgiving on his first foreign trip abroad as the leader of the Catholic church. The pope is headed to Turkey and Lebanon, where he'll meet with political and religious leaders—but, on the way, he enjoyed some mid-flight pumpkin pie and moments of gratitude.
Pope Leo wished the Americans on board his ITA Airways flight a happy Thanksgiving. He also individually thanked the more than 80 journalists who were flying with him, encouraging them to promote peace and unity in their work and to communicate "in a way that really reveals the truth and the harmony that the world needs."
“To the Americans here, happy Thanksgiving!” he reportedly said on his way to Ankara, adding that today is "a wonderful day to celebrate."
Over the mid-flight pumpkin pie he was gifted, he also invited everyone "to come together, to search for greater unity, greater harmony, and to look for the ways that all men and women can really be brothers and sisters—in spite of differences, in spite of different religions, in spite of different beliefs."
Yesterday, Pope Leo also shared a message with the TODAY show for everyone celebrating today's holiday at home with their loved ones.
"I would encourage all people, especially with this beautiful feast that we have in the United States, which unites all people, people of different faiths, people who perhaps do not have the gift of faith, but to say thank you to someone, to recognize that we all have received so many gifts, first and foremost, the gift of life," the Chicago-native told NBC outside of his lakeside residence, Borgo Laudato Si in Castel Gandolfo, nearby Rome.
View this post on InstagramInstagram comments have rushed in, sharing more gratitude and thanks for Pope Leo's words of wisdom.
"Beautiful message how he always includes everyone," one user wrote.
Others agreed.
Another wrote: "He is continuing the embodiment of the late Pope Francis, where he recognizes not only religious people but also non-religious people in the name of unity."
In Ankara, Pope Leo will meet with Turkey’s president and prime minister, the head of Turkey’s religious affairs office, national civil authorities, and more before making his way to Istanbul and later to Lebanon, where he'll continue to promote his message of peace. His trip will include an ecumenical commemoration of the 1700th anniversary of the First Council of Nicaea.
