Rival Execs Reportedly Wondering if Chicago Bulls Could Be Fit for Domantas Sabonis

Despite the Chicago Bulls’ moving toward a youth movement last season, the trade rumors have not gone away.

One reason for this is the team’s better-than-expected start to the year. While the last ten games have provided a sobering dose of reality, the Bulls still hold a winning record 17 games into the regular season. Not bad. The other – and likely greater – reason for the trade talk stems from the capsheet. Chicago is one of only a handful of teams that are in a position to take players making significant money. They have a slew of expiring contracts to be packaged, as well as all of their future first-round picks at their disposal. That’s pretty darn rare in today’s NBA.

Now, whether or not this means the organization actually has the intention of making a big move is a fair question. After taking a more aggressive team-building approach with their previous roster iteration, the front office has recently preached a more methodical and patient strategy. At the same time, things are constantly changing in the NBA, and there is clearly a belief from some that the franchise could look to shake things up again.

Jake Fischer of The Stein Line recently commented on the NBA’s emerging trade market. Specifically focusing on the big men who could become available, he mentioned that the Bulls have been a name brought up by outside execs:

“I’ve heard from more than a few rival executives who have noted Vučević’s trade-friendly contract, plus the other expiring deals on Chicago’s books, which has led them to wonder aloud about the Bulls’ Lithuanian GM Artūras Karnišovas pursuing Sabonis. Similar curiosity about the Bulls as a potential suitor to try to bring Davis back to his native Windy City is also circulating.”

I encourage you to read Jake Fischer’s full intel piece on The Stein Line Subtack.

Here Come the Chicago Bulls Rumors …

Let’s first note what Jake Fischer IS NOT saying. The NBA insider is not reporting any outright interest in Domantas Sabonis or Anthony Davis on behalf of the Chicago Bulls. Instead, all of this chatter is coming from sources outside the organization, which is important. Again, it’s very easy to throw the Bulls into fake trade scenarios because of what we mapped out above. They have the flexibility.

At the same time, does this mean we shouldn’t put any stock into what those on the outside are saying? Absolutely not. They are still providing an informed opinion, and who the heck knows what they have potentially heard about the Bulls’ intentions this season.

We also shouldn’t ignore the Nikola Vucevic situation. The big man is 35 years old, in the final year of his contract, and playing solid basketball to start the year. Whether it’s via trade or 2026 free agency, it has long felt unlikely that he would return to the franchise on a new multi-year deal. And it’s not as if the Bulls have someone waiting in the wings to take over as the big man of the future.

So, is it possible that the Bulls could have an interest in targeting their next answer at center through the trade market? Yes, and Sabonis and Davis are projected to be two of the best available options. Whether or not that means targeting either would actually be a smart move, however, is a very fair question.

We have already hashed out why a Davis trade would be ridiculously risky in a separate post, so I’ll direct you toward that here. As for going after someone like Sabonis, he would at least give the Bulls someone younger and more durable. The big man has suited up for at least 70 games over the last three seasons. However, it is important to note that he is currently stuck on the sidelines with a partially torn meniscus and isn’t expected to return until at least mid-December.

There is also a case to make that Sabonis wouldn’t necessarily fix the problem that has been plaguing Chicago for years. The Bulls’ defense remains a disaster, particularly in the rim-protecting department. Sabonis, while strong and physical, would bring the Bulls another below-the-rim player with limited athleticism in the post. Would he fit in offensively, though? Sure! He is an excellent playmaker from the middle of the floor and a highly efficient finisher inside. The three-point shot has never necessarily come around in the way many hoped, but he will let them fly occasionally. The passing alone also allows him to space the floor.

Regardless, this all goes back to the same key question: Is the juice worth the squeeze? I lean toward no for both Davis and Sabonis (the latter of whom is only in the second year of a four-year, $186 million deal). The Bulls got into their initial roster mess by investing too much too soon into an unproven core. Taking a gamble on either one of these expensive big men, particularly with no playoff proof of concept surrounding this young roster, would feel like a similar path.

Perhaps my mind would change if I learned the price tag for either was astronomically low. But, even then, it would feel like a pretty big risk. The positive vibes around this team currently center around the young talent and the emphasis on development. Driving down that road until at least the offseason continues to feel like the safest approach.
