Arsenal ran riot in the second half against Bayern Munich, storming to a 3–1 victory that inflicted the Bavarians’ first defeat of the season. It was a display that underlined the Gunners’ status as one Europe’s most formidable forces, moving them to a perfect five-from-five record in the Champions League group stage.
Coming into the night, Arsenal had won all nine of their home fixtures this season, while Bayern were unbeaten away – or anywhere for that matter – in 2025-26. These were the two best teams in the Opta Power Rankings going head-to-head, with Europe’s best defence meeting Europe’s most prolific attack. Something had to give.
So it was perhaps slightly ironic that Arsenal won the contest with a full-throttle attacking performance, especially after half-time when their squad depth really proved dividends. Nine of their 12 shots and seven of their eight efforts on target came in the second period as Mikel Arteta’s substitutes swung the game decisively.
Bayern asserted themselves early on. Composed and dominant in possession, they controlled the opening exchanges to such an extent that Manuel Neuer had completed more passes in the first 15 minutes than any Arsenal player.
But control on the deck counts for little if you can’t defend your box, and that’s where Bayern failed for Arsenal’s opener. Bukayo Saka’s whipped inswinger dropped straight into the heart of the six-yard area, where Jurrien Timber rose highest to head home. Arsenal have now scored 10 goals from corners in all competitions this season – more than any other team in Europe’s top five leagues.
The pattern was intentional, though. Arsenal were content to let Bayern have possession, choosing their moments to spring forward and press high when Neuer and his defenders tried to build from the back. That approach yielded several chances, with Eberechi Eze having the best of them as he surged through in transition but scuffed his finish wide.
For all Arsenal’s defensive strength, sometimes a moment of brilliance is enough to break down any structure. Joshua Kimmich dropped deep, spotted a gap, and threaded a perfect through ball into Serge Gnabry. The former Arsenal winger squared first time for youngster Lennart Karl to convert.
Karl, aged 17 years and 277 days, is the youngest player ever to score a UEFA Champions League goal against Arsenal. It was also the first goal Arsenal had conceded in this Champions League campaign, and remarkably, the first goal they had conceded at home in the group stage under Mikel Arteta, having gone nine such games without being breached.
The second half was one-way traffic. Arsenal outshot Bayern 9-5 and had 15 touches in the visitors’ box, compared to Bayern’s six. The pressure eventually told.
Two substitutes combined for Arsenal’s second. Riccardo Calafiori galloped down the left and fizzed a cross into the path of Noni Madueke, who struck home first time to restore the lead.
Another substitute, Gabriel Martinelli, added the third. With Bayern pushed up for a corner, Eze released him with a perfect through ball, and the Brazilian raced clear to finish. Martinelli has now scored in all four of his Champions League appearances this season; his four goals are his best return in a major European campaign for Arsenal.
This may have been billed as a clash between European heavyweights, but on the night Arsenal were superior. They produced 2.81 expected goals to Bayern’s 0.69 – the highest xG Bayern have conceded in over a year, since the 2.95 they allowed against Real Madrid in the 2024 semi-finals.
The winning machine keeps rolling. Arsenal even managed to rest Saka after the hour and reintroduce club captain Martin Ødegaard late on. After a rousing north London derby victory followed by this statement win, Arsenal now head into a seismic clash with Chelsea looking very, very difficult to stop.
