CONESUS, N.Y. — A gray fox in the Town of Conesus tested positive for rabies, according to the Livingston County Public Health Director Jennifer Rodriguez.
The New York State Health Department laboratory confirmed the case on Wednesday. The health department says the fox had contact with two vaccinated domestic animals, which are now getting booster rabies vaccinations. No humans were exposed to the virus.
Rabies is a deadly virus affecting the central nervous system in mammals. It is common in raccoons, skunks, and bats in Livingston County. Unvaccinated pets and farm animals are at risk.
The Health Department urges people to keep pet vaccinations up to date, avoid contact with unfamiliar animals showing unusual behaviors. New York State law mandates rabies vaccinations for dogs, cats, and ferrets starting at four months of age. The Livingston County Department of Health offers free rabies clinics annually.
