The Romanian Embassy in Syria hosted Wednesday a reception to mark Romania’s National Day at the Semiramis Hotel in Damascus.
Chargé d’Affaires of the Romanian Embassy in Syria, Radu Gimbutan, affirmed in his speech that this day symbolises the formation of modern Romania and the strengthening of national unity. He noted that his country celebrates the occasion each year with pride, coupled with a commitment to the values that have guided Romania for more than a century.
Gimbutan explained that this year’s celebration in Damascus carries added significance amid Syria’s profound transformation. He pointed out that December 8, 2024, marked a turning point in modern Syrian history, opening a new chapter defined by the Syrian people’s hopes for stability, accountability, and a better future.
He noted that Romania welcomed the Syrian government’s efforts to launch inclusive political processes, strengthen institutions, and rebuild trust in public life. He stressed that Romania, following Syria’s liberation, stands ready to support the country during this critical and sensitive stage.
Gimbutan underlined that Romania’s commitment is genuine, long-term, and rooted in decades of friendship, affirming Romania’s firm belief that a stable, prosperous, and sovereign Syria is essential for the security and safety of the entire region.
He highlighted that Romania and Syria are celebrating 70 years of diplomatic relations this year. Romania established official ties with Syria on August 9, 1955, at the level of a legation, before upgrading them to embassy status on October 10, 1961.
In conclusion, Gimbutan conveyed Romania’s warmest wishes to the Syrian people, expressing hope that peace will fully return to the country, that hope will grow stronger each day, and that the bonds of friendship between Romania and Syria will flourish from generation to generation.
For his part, Michael Unmacht, Chargé d’Affaires of the European Union Delegation to Syria, told SANA that celebrating Romania’s National Day, as a member state of the EU, carries special importance as it reflects the resumption of national day events in Syria. He noted that such activities signal the revival of diplomatic life through receptions and gatherings, as in any other country, and symbolize Syria’s return to the world after fourteen years without many diplomatic events.
