When Barefoot Contessa first premiered on Food Network in 2002, beloved chef Ina Garten was just 54 years old.
Now, at 77, Garten revealed one thing she’s kept the exact same through it all: her hairstyle.
“When I first got that haircut, I was 25,” said Garten to comedian Amy Poehler during their chat on the Good Hang podcast, Tuesday, Nov. 25. The celebrated chef noted a friend of hers at the time first got the bob from famed stylist Sylvan Melloul, and Garten followed suit.
“I've never changed it.” She added, “Every once in a while, I’ll try something else, and I’ll go, ‘no. I’m going right back to where I started.’”
The two acclaimed women covered a number of topics throughout the episode, from how to properly open and pour a bottle of champagne, to whether they’re “sweet or savory” people. To note: both are savory.
When it comes to collaboration, Garten says it’s something she prefers in both the kitchen and the day-to-day: “If you’re doing something with someone, you want to be collaborative. Let’s just all figure out what the issues are, what we need to do, and then together, we’ll make a decision.”
“I don’t like people that withhold information so that they control the situation,” she adds. “Makes me crazy.”
Known for her warm personality and inviting demeanor, Garten made a name for herself by teaching the world simple yet elevated ways to entertain guests through the kitchen. Her expertise isn’t only found in a recipe, however. She’s also an esteemed decorator, best-selling author, columnist, and producer.
Her titular cookbook, The Barefoot Contessa, came out in 1999. According to Garten’s website, it “turned out to be the most exciting thing [she ’s] ever done professionally.”
Prior to starting her own business, Garten worked for the White House writing budgets and policies under both the Ford and Carter administrations.
“I worked on nuclear energy policy,” Garten noted, laughing alongside Poehler. “After four years of that, I was like, ‘okay, I’m done.’”
Following her exit from government work, she transitioned into her longstanding career by opening a brick-and-mortar specialty food store. Around the same time, she first got her signature bob.
Garten still regularly publishes columns via Substack, and hosts her own podcast, Be My Guest, available on streaming platforms.
