90s Rock Legends Announce First Overseas Show in Nearly a Decade

The 1990s were a golden age of rock-and-roll weirdos. From underground heroes like Alice Donut to post-hardcore legends like Slint to genre-defying oddballs like Ween, these bands proved that the '90s were more than just grunge. And if there's one band that rose to the top of the weird mountain of rock, it was Primus, who just shared some news for fans dying to see them.

Formed in the mid-80s by bass virtuoso Les Claypool, Primus's bizarre lyrics, slap-bass stylings, and unique sound connected with legions of similarly kooky fans. The band became an integral part of alternative rock radio with songs like "John The Fisherman," "Jerry Was A Racecar Driver," "Wynona's Big Brown Beaver," and arguably their best-known song, "My Name Is Mud."

It has been nearly a decade since Primus fans in Europe heard those hits live, and that drought is soon coming to an end. The band will headline the 2026 ArcTanGent festival, taking place August 19-22 in Bristol, UK. It's their first European show since 2017.

ArcTanGent bills itself as an "inclusive hub where music devotees and visionaries can indulge in 4 days of ground-breaking, idiosyncratic sounds." Primus will headline one of the days, alongside Chelsea Wolf and Cult of Luna & Julie Christmas.

"The stars really have aligned for this set of ArcTanGent headliners," said festival organizer James Scarlett, per Metal Hammer, "and it's safe to say all three have been firmly at the top of our wish lists for a very, very long time."

"Primus at ArcTanGent is well overdue, Chelsea Wolfe can finally make that headliner appearance following the booking, announcement and then cancellation from back in 2020 due to Covid, and Mariner by Cult of Luna and Julie Christmas is 100% one of the greatest albums of all time (and celebrating its 10th anniversary next year)," added Scarlett. "To have them all headline ATG in the same year is literally unbelievable - and we're extremely proud to present a festival line-up truly unlike anything else you'll find on the planet."

Primus's last European show was in 2017 when they played the UK's Roundhouse for a special "Evening with Primus." The band was set to go back overseas as part of their Rush-inspired A Tribute to Kings tour (where they played Rush's A Farewell to Kings in full), but had to pull out.

2017 was also when Primus released their most recent album, The Desaturating Seven. The concept album was based on the 1978 children's book The Rainbow Goblins by Italian author Ul de Rico. It was also Primus's second album based on a book or a movie: 2014's Primus & the Chocolate Factory with the Fungi Ensemble re-imagined the soundtrack to 1971's Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.
