No. 8 Alabama sprints past UNLV Runnin’ Rebels, 115-76

No. 8 Alabama men’s basketball pummeled the UNLV Runnin’ Rebels 115-76 in its second contest of the Players Era Festival late Tuesday night.

Guard Aden Holloway led the scoring effort for Alabama with a bounce-back performance, following a tough night from the field in the team’s 95-85 loss to No. 12 Gonzaga. He tallied 26 points on 9-of-14 shooting, nailing 5-of-6 attempts from deep.

“We typically play pretty well after a loss around here,” head coach Nate Oats said postgame. “I thought our guys answered the bell pretty well.”

True freshman forward London Jemison put up the best performance in his college career, scoring 18 points on an efficient 5-of-7 shooting and 6-of-7 at the free-throw line.

Oats said that Jemison has been great, especially since he learned what role the staff wanted him to play in Oats’ system.

He challenged his team to be better on the glass, and it did so early, snagging an early 6-0 advantage on the offensive boards. Rebounding is what Oats said he was “most happy with” in the win, with his team having snagged 20 more total rebounds than the Runnin’ Rebels.

After star guard Labaron Philon Jr. led the Crimson Tide’s scoring effort in the loss to Gonzaga, the team spread out its first-half scoring. Despite a 51-point first half, its offense started slowly from 3-point range, knocking down just 6 of 17 attempts from beyond the arc.

The Crimson Tide continued its strong night on the glass, ending the half with a 24-18 rebounding advantage. Forward Amari Allen led the spread-out yet lethal opening half scoring effort with 9 points.

The scoring kicked into another gear for Alabama in the second half, who quickly opened up a 16-point lead in the opening 5:29 of the second half. Guard Houston Mallette, who began the evening 0-for-4 from the field, started the second half with 6 points.

UNLV continued to struggle to contain Alabama, which went on a 7-0 run, leading Runnin’ Rebels head coach Josh Pastner to call a timeout. The Crimson Tide’s lead soared to 21 points, thanks to a strong 11-of-18 start to the second half on offense.

Walk-on Jacob Martin checked in with two minutes remaining to the delight of Crimson Tide fans in attendance. Martin recorded a block in his limited action.

The team finished the evening with an astounding 64-point second half, all while resting several of its key players ahead of a third-straight game tomorrow night.

The Runnin’ Rebels were voted to finish sixth in the Mountain West Conference in its preseason poll, but have dealt with injuries to several key contributors, hindering the team’s early-season performance.

“I think this will be a pretty good win come March for our resume,” Oats said of the win.

No. 8 Alabama will conclude the Players Era Festival on Wednesday night in a late-night faceoff with the Maryland Terrapins. Tipoff is slated for 10:59 p.m. CT and can be streamed on TNT.
